Sawyer Gipson-Long Placed on 15-Day Injured List Due to Neck Stiffness

Detroit Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to neck stiffness, per MLB.com. Gipson-Long got shelled in his final two outings before this IL placement, allowing 12 hits, four home runs, and 13 earned runs across 6 1/3 innings pitched against the New York Yankees and New York Mets. In 31 1/3 total big-league innings this season, Gipson-Long has pitched to a 7.18 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 26 strikeouts. He's allowed eight home runs, which has been his major issue. Gipson-Long could miss the remainder of the regular season and should be off fantasy radars.

Sawyer Gipson-Long to Start on Tuesday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo and will make the start on Tuesday against the New York Mets, according to Evan Woodbery of MLive. It will be Gipson-Long's seventh appearance and third start for the Tigers this year after he had a nice 2.70 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 26 strikeouts and eight walks in his first four major-league starts in his MLB debut in 2023. The 27-year-old hasn't been quite as good in his small sample size this year with a 4.32 ERA (4.20 FIP) and 1.04 WHIP with 20 strikeouts and only four walks in 25 innings, and he also hasn't pitched into the fifth inning in any game since late June. It means that fantasy managers should look elsewhere for a streamer on Tuesday, especially with Detroit facing a playoff-caliber team in the Mets. Also, Tuesday's outing is likely to just be a spot start for SGL.

Sawyer Gipson-Long Activated From Injured List

The Detroit Tigers activated right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) from the 15-day injured list on Wednesday and optioned Codi Heuer to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Gipson-Long will return to the big-league level after being out since the middle of July with a neck injury. The 27-year-old made five appearances (two starts) for the Tigers earlier this season and allowed 13 runs (12 earned) on 21 hits (four homers) while walking four and striking out 18 in 23 frames. Gipson-Long allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings on his minor-league rehab assignment this month before being activated. He was not a high-end prospect in Detroit's system but impressed in his rookie year in 2023 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in only four starts. Gipson-Long won't have any fantasy appeal in a long-relief role.

Sawyer Gipson-Long Resumes Rehab Assignment

Detroit Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) will make another rehab start Wednesday as he continues his return from neck stiffness that paused his assignment on July 18. The 27-year-old has posted a 4.70 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 23 innings in five appearances this season. With Detroit adding Chris Paddack and Charlie Morton to replace injured starters Jackson Jobe and Reese Olson, Gipson-Long will need to earn a rotation spot upon return. While there's some intrigue in deeper fantasy formats, his role remains uncertain, and managers should proceed with caution until there's more clarity on his usage.

Sawyer Gipson-Long Pulled Off Rehab Assignment

Detroit Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) has been pulled off his rehab assignment because of ongoing neck issues and "general fatigue," Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Gipson-Long, on the 15-day injured list with neck stiffness since July 2, had an ugly rehab start with Triple-A Toledo last Friday. The 27-year-old yielded seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings. He complained of fatigue afterward, which led the Tigers to hit pause on his rehab. Gipson-Long could throw a bullpen session in the coming days and then restart a rehab assignment, according to Petzold. The former sixth-round pick has pitched 23 innings in the bigs this year and logged a 4.70 ERA with 18 strikeouts and four walks.

Sawyer Gipson-Long has Ugly Rehab Outing

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) made another rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Friday. Gipson-Long was fantastic with 4 2/3 scoreless innings during his first rehab start. Sadly, he wasn't able to have the same success on Friday. He tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out four batters. Gipson-Long was blasted during this outing, but the main focus is him getting healthy. He continues to work his way back from a neck injury that has sidelined him since late June. He figures to return to Detroit soon, but it's unclear if he'll reclaim his fifth spot in the rotation. That being said, Gipson-Long isn't someone that needs to be rostered in fantasy formats right now.

Sawyer Gipson-Long Makes Rehab Start on Sunday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) made a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday and looked sharp, tossing 4 2/3 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out five against Triple-A Omaha. Gipson-Long threw 41 of his 59 pitches for strikes in the outing and was in control all the way. The 27-year-old was put on the 15-day injured list back on July 2 due to a neck strain, but he appears to be recovering nicely and could come off the IL to rejoin the big-league club for the start of the second half of the season on July 18. Gipson-Long had a nice 2.70 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in four starts in his rookie year in 2023 but didn't pitch at all in the big leagues in 2024. He allowed 13 runs (12 earned) with four walks and 18 K's in five outings (two starts) this year before his injury. Gipson-Long could be a rotation option for Detroit in the second half.

Sawyer Gipson-Long Completes Bullpen Session on Thursday

Detroit Tigers right-handed pitching prospect Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) completed a bullpen session on Thursday. Gipson-Long was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 2 with a neck strain. This was the first time the Mercer product was able to complete a bullpen session since being placed on the injured list. Through 23 innings this season, Gipson-Long posted a 4.70 ERA with a strong 1.09 WHIP. During this stretch, Gipson-Long tallied 18 strikeouts while showing elite command, allowing walks at a 4.3% rate. Gipson-Long made his MLB debut during the 2023 campaign and held a 2.70 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP through 20 innings. He was unable to pitch in the majors in 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. When he is cleared to return, he will likely be deployed in a long relief role, which will limit his fantasy value.

Sawyer Gipson-Long Lands on Injured List With Neck Stiffness

The Detroit Tigers placed right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 29) on Wednesday with neck stiffness and recalled right-hander Tyler Owens from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Gipson-Long recently returned to the big leagues after recovering from Tommy John surgery that he had last April, but now he's back on the IL with a neck injury and will be out through the All-Star break in mid-July. When the 27-year-old is recovered from his neck injury, he's unlikely to have a spot in the starting rotation with Reese Olson (finger) returning this weekend. Gipson-Long appeared in five games (two starts) for the Tigers and allowed 13 runs (12 earned) on 21 hits (four homers) while walking four and striking out 18 in 23 innings.

Sawyer Gipson-Long to Start on Wednesday

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that right-handed pitching prospect Sawyer Gipson-Long (elbow, hip) will make the start on Wednesday against the division-rival Chicago White Sox. Gipson-Long will be making his first big-league start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last April and a hip surgery in July, so even though the matchup is an excellent one, there will be plenty of risk with using the 27-year-old right away as a streamer. Detroit's No. 29 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, posted a solid 2.20 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 16 punchouts and only two walks in 16 1/3 innings over five minor-league rehab starts over three levels. In his big-league debut in 2023, Gipson-Long had a nice 2.70 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 26 K's and eight walks in four starts (20 innings). He relies heavily on fastballs that aren't overpowering, limiting his fantasy upside.
