Spencer Steer's Stability Makes Him a Priority Waiver-Wire Target

Across 275 plate appearances in 2026, Cincinnati Reds outfielder/first baseman Spencer Steer is hitting .249/.335/.436 with 11 home runs, 28 RBI, 42 runs scored, and three stolen bases. The 28-year-old may no longer carry the same speed upside he did earlier in his career when he stole 25 bases in 2024. Still, Steer profiles as a balanced contributor with multi-positional eligibility. He owns a 13% barrel rate on the season and seems like a solid bet to top 20 home runs for the fourth consecutive campaign in 2026. Steer also owns a 10.5% walk rate with a manageable 21.1% strikeout rate, which keeps his production floor at the plate stable. In any fantasy league where he's not already rostered, Steer profiles as a must-add hitter to target on the waiver wire.

Spencer Steer a Must-Add with Five-Category Potential

Cincinnati Reds first baseman/outfielder Spencer Steer has gone hitless in three straight games, but his overall production still keeps him on the waiver-wire radar. The 28-year-old is hitting .266 with nine home runs, 24 RBI, 38 runs scored, and 12 doubles with a 50:25 K:BB across 218 at-bats. Steer has also chipped in three stolen bases and shown solid upside on the base paths earlier in his career, swiping double-digit bags in two of his previous three seasons. He showcased his overall upside on Tuesday, June 2, against the Kansas City Royals, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored, and two RBI. Steer's appeal comes from his ability to help in power and runs while offering useful lineup flexibility. He continues to bat in the heart of the Cincinnati lineup, which will keep him in a prime position to bolster his counting stats. Rostered in 57% of Yahoo leagues, Steer is worth adding wherever he remains available for managers looking for corner-infield or outfield help across the five standard categories.

Spencer Steer's Quad Injury a Thing of the Past?

Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Spencer Steer (quadriceps) played through a sore right quadriceps that bothered him for most of last season, and he finished with a .238/.312/.411 slash line, 21 home runs, and 75 RBI in 146 games. Steer also dealt with a sore right shoulder that lingered after the 2024 campaign. To avoid re-injuring his quad this year, Steer said he cleaned up some of his sprinting mechanics. The 28-year-old will see time at first base in 2026 and could occasionally spell Matt McClain at second base, but most of his playing time is expected to come in either left or right field. Steer's drop in stolen bases from 25 in 2024 to just seven last year likely had a lot to do with his quad issue. Steer will be more of a super-utility player in 2026, and his stolen base numbers could bounce back with better help, giving fantasy managers some hope that he can post another 20-20 season. He's hit at least 20 homers in each of the last three seasons, being propped up by a very hitter-friendly home ballpark.

Spencer Steer to Serve in Utility Role in 2026

Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Spencer Steer, who was a National League Gold Glove finalist at first base in 2025, will play some in the outfield and will have a utility role in 2026, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Eugenio Suarez and Sal Stewart are expected to see most of the at-bats at designated hitter and first base, so Steer could get squeezed to mostly playing in left field. Elite defenseman Ke'Bryan Hayes will be the starting third baseman. Left field was Steer's primary position in 2024. Although Steer managed to reach the 20-homer mark for the third straight year in 2025, he was mostly a disappointment offensively with a .238/.312/.411 slash line, .723 OPS, 21 homers, 75 RBI, 66 runs scored, and seven stolen bases in 146 regular-season games. It helps that Steer is eligible at first and outfield in most fantasy leagues, but with his playing time potentially taking a dip in 2026, his fantasy stock is on the decline. RotoBaller has Steer ranked as the No. 25 fantasy first baseman.

Spencer Steer Scratched Monday Against the Cardinals

Cincinnati Reds first baseman/outfielder Spencer Steer (neck) was originally part of the team's lineup for Monday's game, but he had to be scratched due to neck spasms. Steer's playing time has been limited over the last couple of weeks since the arrival of top prospect Sal Stewart, who moved from third base to first base in Monday's lineup adjustment. Steer is hitting only .208 since the All-Star break, but does have six home runs in those 46 games. On the season, he has 17 homers, a .237 batting average, and a .309 wOBA. Steer could be back in the lineup soon as the Reds chase the NL Wild Card, but for now, he's considered day-to-day.

Spencer Steer Taking a Seat on Saturday

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Spencer Steer is out of the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Athletics. This appears to be a rest day for Steer who has sat out in three of the last four games. Steer has struggled lately, slashing .200/.333./200 without any home runs or RBI over the last week. In his absence, Sal Stewart will cover first base and bat sixth against right-hander Luis Severino. At this point, Steer is starting to fall off the fantasy radar and is becoming more of a deep league option.

Spencer Steer Still Out on Tuesday

Cincinnati Reds infielder Spencer Steer (leg) remains out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays at Great American Ball Park. Rookie Sal Stewart will make another start at first base and will hit sixth against Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios. A leg injury will cause Steer to miss his second straight start, although he did come off the bench in Monday's series opener, suggesting he could return to the starting nine as early as Wednesday's tilt. Stewart made his major-league debut in Monday's win over Toronto and went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a strikeout. Steer is hitting only .235 (107-for-455) but should reach the 20-homer mark for the third straight season with the Reds. He's currently sitting at 17 homers and 63 RBI in 128 games. He's mostly disappointed in the steals department (six) after swiping a career-high 25 in 2024.

Spencer Steer Out, Sal Stewart Debuting on Monday

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Spencer Steer (leg) is out of the lineup on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Manager Terry Francona said the Reds are resting Steer because he has been playing through a leg injury. Top infield prospect Sal Stewart, making his major league debut, will fill in for Steer at first base and bat sixth against right-hander Chris Bassitt. Stewart has slashed a superb .309/.383/.524 with 20 homers, 80 RBI, 78 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases in 494 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A this season. The 21-year-old is versatile enough to play multiple positions in the infield, and Francona indicated that he'll receive plenty of opportunities during the final month of the season.

Spencer Steer Returns to Lineup

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Spencer Steer (hand) is back in his team's lineup for Friday's series opener against the hosting Philadelphia Phillies. Steer was hit in the hand by a pitch on Wednesday during a suspended game with the Red Sox, and the swelling forced him from their night outing. Fortunately, he was only required to miss one contest, as he'll slot back in at first base, batting fifth against Boston. The Oregon product turned it around in June to slash a crisp .302/.320/.521 with half of his ten homers, and has brought his overall average to a respectable .252 -- a nice bounce back from the .225 he posted a season ago.

Spencer Steer Dealing with a Hand Contusion

Cincinnati Reds first baseman/outfielder Spencer Steer (hand) was scratched from Wednesday night's game in Boston, but since X-rays were negative, he has been diagnosed with a hand contusion. Steer was hit by a pitch by Bryan Bello in the seventh inning of the suspended game, which resumed on Wednesday afternoon. He was able to finish that game, but the injury swelled to the point where he was scratched on Wednesday night. Manager Terry Francona said, "We didn't think it made a whole lot of sense to play him. We'll see how he shows up tomorrow. Depending on how he's feeling, we'll see what to do." Steer could end up with a quick stint on the injured list, or he could be back in the lineup as soon as Friday in Philadelphia. Keep a close eye out for an update on Steer's hand and availability for the last week before the All-Star break.
