Bryan Bresee to Undergo Season-Ending ACL Surgery

New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee (knee) will undergo season-ending surgery after tearing his ACL, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN. Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the news Sunday. Bresee suffered the injury during the Saints' first training camp practice Wednesday, ending his fourth NFL season before it began. The 24-year-old started all 15 games he played last year, finishing with 37 tackles, 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, and one forced fumble. He has recorded 14.5 sacks in 49 career games since New Orleans selected him 29th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Saints exercised Bresee's fifth-year option during the offseason, keeping him under contract through 2027. Vernon Broughton, Nathan Shepherd, John Ridgeway III, and second-round rookie Christen Miller are among the defensive linemen who could receive more work in his absence.

Bryan Bresee Feared to Have Suffered a Torn ACL

New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee (knee), who is one of the linchpins of the team's defense and a rising star at his position, is feared to have suffered a torn ACL early in training camp, according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. Bresee is undergoing more tests, but the former first-rounder is likely done for the 2026 season. The 24-year-old Clemson product was selected by New Orleans with the 29th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. He only mustered 2.5 sacks in 15 starts for the Saints last year, but Bresee has recorded 14.5 sacks, 86 tackles (44 solo), 19 tackles for loss, 31 QB hits, 12 pass breakups, and two forced fumbles in 49 games (26 starts) in his three years in the league. It's a major blow to the Saints' interior defensive line before the start of the 2026 regular season. With Bresee likely out all year, John Ridgeway and Vernon Broughton will be asked to step up on defense.

Bryan Bresee Will Continue To See Reps With Starters

New Orleans Saints rookie defensive tackle Bryan Bresee received snaps with the first-team defensive tackles at times this offseason, and he'll likely continue to be swapped into the rotation throughout the summer at training camp. It's no sure thing he'll be a starter in Week 1, but Bresee will get his fair share of first-team reps in training camp and into the regular season if he stays healthy. The 21-year-old has been taking advice from veteran defensive end Cameron Jordan. "He's probably a little more sudden, a little more quick than maybe I anticipated," head coach Dennis Allen said. "The things I've been most pleased with is really his intelligence level and his work ethic. He's worked extremely hard throughout this offseason, and I'm looking for him to be a key contributor for us."

Saints Go With Defense In Bryan Bresee At No. 29

The New Orleans Saints selected University of Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft on Thursday night. Bresee is not a small human by any means. He stands at 6-foot-5, 298 pounds and will give New Orleans a monstrous presence on the interior of their defensive line moving forward. Bresee excels by using his length to his advantage to keep offensive line blockers away from him. The 21-year-old isn't quick enough to play off the edge, but he'll have plenty of speed up the middle. Bresee should be an immediate starter for the Saints as more of a run defender who can control the gaps inside. The Saints will be hoping he can reach his ceiling if he can also become a pocket-pushing pass-rusher.
