Zach Wilson News
New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas said the organization remains very high on quarterback Zach Wilson despite his struggles in 2022. "Our stance on Zach hasn't changed. Zach has a very high ceiling. When players love this game and work their tails off, they usually hit their ceiling. Still feel strongly Zach's going to hit his," Douglas said. Wilson had a disastrous second season in the NFL, getting benched multiple times while finishing with a 54.5% completion percentage, 1,688 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions in just nine starts. It's widely known that the Jets are looking to upgrade with a veteran quarterback this offseason through trade or free agency, but they aren't giving up on Wilson just yet. All signs point to Wilson serving as a backup for New York to start the 2023 season.
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Jets have no plans on trading quarterback Zach Wilson. The 23-year-old was taken No. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and has appeared in 22 games for the club. Throughout his tenure in New York, Wilson has struggled, amassing 4,022 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions while completing only 55.2% of his throws. However, the Jets believe Wilson can be a quality signal-caller, although the team still intends to acquire a veteran quarterback with the hope he'll develop along the way.
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said that quarterback Zach Wilson will have a chance to compete for the starting QB job in 2023, but Saleh won't commit to Wilson being the starter right after the Week 18 regular season finale loss to the Miami Dolphins. The former No. 2 overall pick got a late start to the 2022 campaign due to a knee injury and then completely flopped, getting benched twice. He finished with a 54.5% completion percentage, 1,688 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions in nine starts and looked worse in his second NFL season. Many folks believe he needs a change of scenery already, but the Jets aren't giving up on him just yet. Mike White and Joe Flacco are free agents this offseason, but the Jets are fully expected to bring in another QB -- via free agency or a trade -- so Wilson will likely be fighting an uphill battle to win his job back.
