The Jacksonville Jaguars restructured safety Rayshawn Jenkins' contract on Thursday to open up $5.1 million in salary cap space for the 2023 season. The Jags converted $6.4 million of his base salary into a signing bonus after the 29-year-old defensive back signed a four-year, $35 million deal with the team in 2021. Jenkins had his best NFL season last year in his second year in Jacksonville, recording a career-high 116 tackles (73 solo), one sack, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 12 passes defensed and three forced fumbles in 17 regular season starts. The former fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017 out of Miami is expected to be the team's starting strong safety again in 2023.
Jaguars Continue Adding To Secondary With Rayshawn Jenkins
The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free-agent safety Rayshawn Jenkins to a four-year, $35 million deal with $16 million fully guaranteed. The deal has a maximum total value of $39.5 million with incentives. The Jaguars also added defensive tackle Tyson Alualu to a two-year, $6 million deal on Tuesday. Jenkins previously played with the Los Angeles Chargers after being drafted in the fourth round in 2017 out of the University of Miami. He'll join a safety group that has struggled to find consistency alongside Jarrod Wilson. Jenkins ha 32 career regular season starts and was able to record 174 combined tackles, nine pass breakups and five interceptions in his time with Los Angeles. Jacksonville will be hoping that he can improve their safety coverage deep down the field.
Rayshawn Jenkins Faces Uphill Battle To Play In Week 17
Los Angeles Chargers safety Rayshawn Jenkins (ankle) has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, putting his availability for Sunday's game versus Kansas City highly in doubt. Jenkins departed the team's contest in Week 16 early, but he has started all 15 games for the Chargers this year, having compiled 84 tackles, four passes defended, two interceptions, one sack, and one quarterback hit. Alohi Gilman would likely take over increased duties without Jenkins in the secondary, further knocking the Chargers Defense down a peg in appeal. When combined with the likely absence of Jenkins -- along with Joey Bosa and Casey Hayward Jr.'s statuses up in the air -- and facing a high-octane Chiefs offense, the shrewd move of nabbing a defense against a team that likely won't play their starters all game may prove to be too much of a risk for most fantasy managers to take.
Los Angeles Chargers safety Rayshawn Jenkins made a slashing leap in front of a Chiefs receiver to snag his third interception of the year on Monday night. The pick was just the second one of the season for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and LA is the first defense this season to hold Mahomes under 200 yards passing when he played a full game. Unfortunately, failures on the offensive side of the ball cost the Chargers the game even though the defense held KC to just 24 total points. While it looks like the season is a wash for LA, their defense can still be useful if they can play like that more often.
Los Angeles Chargers safety Rayshawn Jenkins was able to provide a moment of happiness for Chargers fans on Sunday when he made a beautiful diving stab to snatch an interception away on a deep pass. Jenkins' play helped act as a catalyst to allow LA to get back into the game when they were down by three touchdowns, and the offense was able to turn the change in possession into a touchdown a few minutes later. Jenkins and the rest of the Chargers Defense played a decent game against Pittsburgh and their third-string quarterback getting his first ever start, but they still struggled to generate any pressure on the quarterback. After a second straight loss, they'll need to step it up over the next few weeks if they want to stop the slide.
