Trey Benson Not Yet Ready for 11-on-11 Drills

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee) was back at practice Monday, but head coach Mike LaFleur said Tuesday that Benson is not yet ready for 11-on-11 drills. The third-year back has been dealing with another flare-up in the surgically repaired left knee that limited him to four games last season. He ran well when he was out there, finishing 2025 with 160 yards on 29 carries and another 64 yards on 13 catches. The problem now is time. Arizona has to cut its roster to 53 players on Aug. 30, and Benson is currently listed fourth on the depth chart behind Tyler Allgeier, Jeremiyah Love and James Conner. Love is dealing with an ankle injury and Conner still hasn't done 11-on-11 work either, so there is an opening if Benson can get healthy enough to take advantage of it. For now, though, Monday's return was only a first step. He still has to show the Cardinals he can handle full team work before cutdown day.

Trey Benson Back at Practice on Monday

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee) was back at training camp practice on Monday, according to Tyler Drake of Arizona Sports. Benson's surgically repaired left knee flared up several weeks ago, and the Cardinals have been playing it safe with him after he played in only four games in 2025 in his second year in the league. The 24-year-old former third-rounder from Florida State figures to be Arizona's RB4 to begin the 2026 regular season as long as all of rookie Jeremiyah Love (ankle), Tyler Allgeier, and James Conner (foot) are fully healthy. Benson did not play in last Thursday's preseason contest against the Las Vegas Raiders, but he could get some run this Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys if both Love and Conner are unavailable. He has an opportunity to make some noise this week with both Love and Conner nursing injuries, but Benson will still be off the fantasy radar in most single-year leagues in 2026.

No Timeline on Trey Benson's Return

There is no timeline on the return of Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee), but head coach Mike LaFleur said he's "better than he was" when his knee flared up recently, according to Howard Balzer of Cards Wire. Benson only played in four games in his sophomore campaign in 2025 due to a left knee injury, and the 24-year-old recently had a setback when that same knee flared up. As a result, the former third-rounder from Florida State didn't play in the team's preseason opener on Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders, and it seems likely he won't play in Week 2 of the preseason against the Dallas Cowboys next Saturday. Arizona's backfield is suddenly very thin, with Benson, rookie first-rounder Jeremiyah Love (ankle), and James Conner (foot) all unavailable. If the team's entire RB room is healthy going into Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers, Benson will be fourth on the depth chart and completely off the fantasy radar.

Trey Benson Returns to Practice on Tuesday

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee) returned to practice on Tuesday after a flare-up last week, according to head coach Mike LaFleur. Benson is coming off a 2025 season in which he missed most of the year following meniscus surgery in October. The 2024 third-round pick is on the roster bubble, competing for touches with third-overall pick Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier, and former starter James Conner. Benson is a trade candidate, as his current RB4 role is well below his talent level. Fantasy managers will need to monitor the former Florida State running back's status heading into 2026, as he could offer late-round appeal if traded to the right situation.

Trey Benson Experiencing Discomfort in his Knee

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee) experienced discomfort and flaring in his left knee, head coach Mike LaFleur told Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. LaFleur said Benson was feeling better on Monday, though, which is "good news," and the head coach doesn't expect it to be a multi-week issue. The Cardinals are being cautious with Benson on a daily basis after he required season-ending arthroscopic surgery on the same knee last season. The 24-year-old former third-rounder in 2024 from Florida State only played in four games in 2025 in his sophomore campaign with the Cardinals, and then the organization went out and drafted Jeremiyah Love in the first round and signed Tyler Allgeier in free agency. As things currently stand, Benson is the Cardinals' RB4 in training camp behind Allgeier, Love, and James Conner. The good news is that Benson could end up playing in Thursday's Hall of Fame preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, and he should be ready for the start of the 2026 regular season. However, Benson's value may have dropped more than any fantasy RB since the start of last year due to injuries and added competition in the backfield. Fantasy managers should be ignoring him in redraft leagues in 2026.

Trey Benson Absent from Practice

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson, who has been working primarily with the second-team offense as he works his way back from the torn meniscus that ended his 2025 season, was not spotted during Sunday's practice. The third-year back was not mentioned as an expected absence when head coach Mike LaFleur addressed the media before practice, and he is not a player who can afford to fall any further behind, already battling for a roster spot in a crowded room featuring roster locks Jeremiyah Love and Tyler Allgeier, as well as veteran James Conner. The Cardinals open up preseason action with the Hall of Fame Game on August 6, and Benson's participation will need to be monitored, as he may need to prove himself during in-game action to earn a spot on the team.

Door Could Be Closing on Trey Benson

The pads have come on at Arizona Cardinals training camp, and Arizona Sports' Tyler Drake believes that third-year running back Trey Benson could be falling perilously behind in the competition for meaningful work in 2026. The Cardinals bolstered their running back room this offseason through the free agent acquisition of Tyler Allgeier and the drafting of Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and the moves look to be paying early dividends. Allgeier has almost exclusively been the first back through positional drills, and Drake reports that Love has looked like the real deal in the early days of camp, standing out with his shiftiness and playmaking abilities. Even Bam Knight has surprised with some early highlights, while neither Benson nor veteran James Conner has taken part in full team drills, as they each work through the final stages of recovery from the injuries that ended their respective 2025 campaigns. Conner is a proven leader, and his place on the final roster would appear to be more secure after recently being singled out by offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, but for Benson, every day that he falls behind makes his future with the team that much murkier.

Trey Benson Back at Practice to Begin Training Camp

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee), who was held out of the offseason program, participated in drills during the team's training camp practice on Thursday, per Cardinals Wire's Jess Root. It's unclear what exactly Benson did, but coming off a season-ending knee injury in 2025, the Cardinals are expected to ease both Benson and veteran James Conner (ankle, foot) back into workouts this summer. The 24-year-old Benson, a former third-rounder in 2024 from Florida State, was in line for lead-back duties when Conner went down last year, but he only played in four games himself due to a knee injury that required surgery. Now that the Cardinals have added rookie first-rounder Jeremiyah Love and Tyler Allgeier, Benson will open the 2026 regular season as the RB4, at best, pushing him entirely off the redraft fantasy radar. A change of scenery is probably the only way he can get back in good fantasy graces in single-league and dynasty/keeper formats.

Trey Benson's Dynasty Appeal Is Fading in Arizona

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson finally had a shot at replacing James Conner last September, then his own knee injury erased the opportunity. A meniscus procedure ended his season after four games. He had been productive in that brief run, taking 29 carries for 160 yards and catching 13 of 16 targets for another 64, but Arizona spent the offseason building around other backs. Conner reworked his deal to stay. Tyler Allgeier signed for two years. Then the Cardinals used the third overall pick on Jeremiyah Love, who is expected to rise to the top of Mike LaFleur's depth chart. Benson was still rehabbing during the offseason program, though the team expects him back for training camp. Even healthy, finding weekly work will be difficult. Love, Allgeier, and Conner are the obvious top three, and Benson has appeared in only 17 games across two seasons. The 4.9 career yards per carry keep a little intrigue alive, but this is not an automatic buy-low. Contenders cannot count on him, and rebuilders should be willing to move him for a useful return rather than wait for the depth chart to get even tighter.

Should Dynasty Managers Look to Move on From Trey Benson?

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson had a golden opportunity to take over as his team's lead back in 2025 after Cardinals veteran running back James Conner suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 3. However, Benson himself then suffered a knee injury in Week 4 that ultimately ended his season as well. While Benson is expected to be fully healthy and ready to go for the start of 2026, the situation around him in Arizona has changed. The Cardinals signed running back Tyler Allgeier to a two-year contract in free agency and then drafted all-world running back prospect Jeremiyah Love third overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Arizona also still currently has Conner on its roster, whom Benson has been unable to pass on the depth chart since he entered the league in 2023. A change in scenery could drastically alter Benson's dynasty outlook, but until that happens, his fantasy appeal is minimal.
