Cole Sands in the Lead in Minnesota's Bullpen Heirarchy After First Save?

Minnesota Twins right-handed reliever Cole Sands was called on for the team's first save opportunity on Saturday in Baltimore against the Orioles at Camden Yards, and he delivered for his first save of the year and his ninth total in his fifth big-league season. The 28-year-old slammed the door shut by striking out two in two scoreless and hitless innings in the 4-1 victory. The Twins are expected to utilize a closer-by-committee situation for saves, but it's definitely worth noting that Minnesota went with Sands for their first save chance. Other relievers that could be options for saves for manager Derek Shelton include Taylor Rogers and Justin Topa. Sharpening his secondary pitches would go a long way towards helping Sands lock down more save chances in the Twin Cities. For fantasy managers in deeper leagues in need of more saves options, Sands will be worth a look early on. He's currently only rostered in 11% of Yahoo leagues.

Cole Sands Pitches Scoreless Eighth Inning

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Cole Sands pitched a scoreless eighth inning on Sunday in a 5-4 win over the Guardians. He struck out two and walked one. He was brought on to face the third, fourth, and fifth batters in the Guardians lineup, making it a higher leverage situation than the ninth. This was the second time he has been used in this way since the trade deadline, which implies this could be a true committee situation with Sands being used in the highest leverage spot. Michael Tonkin was initially brought in for the save chance, but allowed the first four batters to reach base and was pulled in favor of Erasmo Ramirez. A huge hole has opened up in the ninth inning with the departure of Jhoan Duran at the trade deadline, and Sands is still the most enticing option to own in fantasy. The saves will eventually come if he continues to be used in the highest leverage opportunities.

Cole Sands Collects Second Save On Saturday

Minnesota Twins right-hander Cole Sands earned his second save of the season on Saturday afternoon in a 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Sands pitched a spotless ninth and added a strikeout in relief of usual closer Jhoan Duran, who was called upon to face the heart of the Red Sox order in the eighth inning. That left the save opportunity for Sands. With the usual setup men Brock Stewart and Justin Topa out with injuries, Sands could see himself in a higher leverage role in the short-term with lefty Caleb Thielbar and should earn holds and the occasional vulture save.

Cole Sands To Resume Throwing This Week

Minnesota Twins right-hander Cole Sands (shoulder) will resume throwing off a mound this week. Sands has been sidelined on the injured list since June 4 with a right-shoulder impingement, but he's beginning to make some progress towards a return to Minnesota's bullpen. Before being activated, he'll most likely need a short minor-league rehab assignment. The 25-year-old has mostly been a long reliever for the Twins this year, and he's been excellent, allowing only one run on 10 hits while walking seven and striking out 13 in 12 1/3 innings over seven appearances out of the bullpen before his injury in just his second major-league season. Sands allowed 21 runs (20 earned) on 35 hits while walking 13 and striking out 28 in 30 2/3 innings in 2022.
