Jeff Hoffman Out as Blue Jays Closer

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Jeff Hoffman is out as the team's closer, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. The Blue Jays will go with a closer-by-committee approach for now while Hoffman works on things in lower-leverage spots. This announcement shouldn't come as a big surprise after manager John Schneider refused to commit to using Hoffman earlier this week, the next time a save situation arose. He was unavailable on Wednesday in the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels due to a heavy recent workload, and for now, he'll be demoted from the closer's role in Toronto. The 33-year-old has continued to struggle after famously blowing Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hoffman was an All-Star with the Phillies in 2024 and had a career-high 33 saves in 2025 in his first year with Toronto, but that also came with a bloated 4.37 ERA in 68 innings pitched. He has allowed 11 earned runs (nine earned) while walking six and striking out 24 in 10 2/3 innings in his 12 outings in 2026. Hoffman has been bitten by some bad luck, but it doesn't change the fact that he's been demoted. Louis Varland figures to get the next shot to close out games for the Jays, and he's currently rostered in 32% of Yahoo leagues.

Blue Jays Considering Demoting Jeff Hoffman in the Bullpen?

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Jeff Hoffman will not be available for Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels after pitching three times in four days, but manager John Schneider said the team will "use the off day to talk about (role) with him," according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. "We'll re-evaluate everything, talk with him, and see how he's doing. He's going through it, obviously, a little bit." Hoffman was credited with his first hold of the year in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Angels, but he was pulled from the game after just one-third of an inning, having allowed an earned run on two hits, two hit-by-pitches, and a strikeout. Louis Varland came on to replace him and closed the door by inducing a double-play groundout. Fantasy managers scrounging for saves in the early going in 2026 should look to pick Varland up off the waiver wire immediately. Hoffman has strikeout upside -- he's fanned 24 in just 10 2/3 innings, but he's also allowed 11 runs (nine earned) while walking six and blowing three saves already. He's a very volatile option for saves in fantasy who might be on the verge of a bullpen demotion.

Jeff Hoffman Stumbles in Save Situation on Tuesday, Falling into Committee

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jeff Hoffman struggled again in a save situation Tuesday, allowing one run on two hits and hitting two batters while recording just one out in a 4-2 win. Hoffman has now allowed seven runs across his last four appearances, and his ERA has climbed to 7.59 through 10.2 innings this season. His command has been inconsistent, and his inability to limit damage in key moments is becoming a concern. Hoffman showed flashes of high-end ability last year, but those stretches have not carried over. If these struggles continue, his hold on the closer role will weaken and Toronto may explore other options.

Jeff Hoffman Bounces Back to Earn Third Save, Strikes Out the Side

Toronto Blue Jays reliever Jeff Hoffman gave up multiple runs in each of his last two appearances, but he was much more effective on Monday, closing out the Angels in a 5-2 win. Hoffman gave up a leadoff single to Jo Adell, but then fanned Josh Lowe, Logan O'Hoppe, and Adam Frazier in succession to end the game. Hoffman has allowed 10 runs (eight earned) in his 11 games this season and has a 6.97 ERA and 1.94 WHIP, despite a 2.94 FIP. He has three saves and three blown saves after Monday's performance, but since the Blue Jays are sticking with him at closer, he remains a strong fantasy option, especially if he is able to build on Monday's successful outing.

Jeff Hoffman Seeing Fantasy Value Fall Amid Rough Stretch

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman has struggled mightily thus far during the 2026 season, pitching to the tune of a 7.71 ERA and 2.04 WHIP through 9 1/3 innings pitched. Additionally, he has blown three of his five save opportunities so far this season. Blue Jays' manager, John Schneider, stated on Saturday after Hoffman blew the save in Arizona against the Diamondbacks that he (Hoffman) will continue to remain the team's closer following the game, per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. The man behind Hoffman, Louis Varland, has been fantastic so far in the 2026 season, with a 0.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 11 innings pitched. Hoffman appears to have the manager's trust for now, but needs to start converting on his save opportunities if he wants to keep his job as the closer. Hoffman is coming off a career-high 33 saves in 2025.

Jeff Hoffman Takes Second Loss, Still has Manager's Confidence?

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman saw his struggles continue during Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hoffman came into a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning, but things quickly got away from him. Hoffman took the loss after serving up a grand slam to Corbin Carroll. His final line was three hits allowed, four earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts over an inning of work. Hoffman now sees his ERA rise to 7.71 ERA after an horrendous outing. Despite the struggles, Jays manager John Schneider stated that Hoffman will remain the closer. This will be a situation to monitor if Hoffman continues to struggle going forward.

Jeff Hoffman Blows Third Save of the Season, Falling out of Ninth-Inning Job?

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman struggled again Tuesday, blowing his third save of the season in a 9-7 extra-innings win against the Brewers. Hoffman entered the ninth inning with a 6-4 lead but allowed two runs on two hits, forcing extra innings. The 33-year-old is now two for five in save chances, a large concern for a contender. He owns a 1.80 WHIP and 4.32 ERA across nine appearances. Hoffman has not found consistency since arriving from Philadelphia, and his grip on the closer role is weakening. Toronto could begin to consider alternative options if these struggles continue.

Jeff Hoffman Bounces Back to Record First Save of 2026 on Sunday

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman picked up his first save of the 2026 season on Sunday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts in his team's 5-2 win over the Athletics. The steady outing is a welcome sign for fantasy managers after Hoffman blew his first save chance of the year on Friday, allowing a game-tying solo home run to Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers. Hoffman is coming off an up-and-down season with the Blue Jays in 2025. The 33-year-old recorded 33 saves and a 29.3% strikeout rate, but he also pitched to an elevated 4.37 ERA thanks to his 1.99 HR/9. Hoffman still appears to be secure in the closer role in Toronto for the time being, but he may not have the longest leash, particularly if his home run issues persist.

Jeff Hoffman Blows First Save Chance of 2026, Picks Up Win

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed closer Jeff Hoffman, who famously blew the save in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers last fall, blew his first save opportunity of the 2026 season as well on Opening Day on Friday against the Athletics. Hoffman entered in the top of the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead and allowed a solo shot to catcher Shea Langeliers, his second of the day, to even the score. Luckily for the veteran right-hander, the Blue Jays scored in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off and give Hoffman his first win of the season. In his inning of work, the 33-year-old struck out four batters (one reached on a wild pitch). Hoffman should have a longer leash at the back end of the Blue Jays' bullpen early this season with Yimi Garcia (elbow) on the injured list, but if he continues to struggle, either Garcia or Louis Varland could get some closing opportunities for Toronto. Hoffman had a career-high 33 saves in 2025, but he also had a shaky 4.37 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 68 regular-season innings. It's just one blown save, but more struggles could quickly put him on the hot seat as the Jays' closer in 2026.

Jeff Hoffman Joins USA Roster, Replacing Clayton Kershaw in WBC

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman has been added to the United States of America's roster for the World Baseball Classic, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. He will join the team for the semifinals in Miami, replacing now-retired pitcher Clayton Kershaw. Now 33 years old, Hoffman has been an effective bullpen arm late into his career. While his FIP did jump to 4.90 last year, he still locked down 33 saves for a Jays team that won the American League pennant. Hoffman finished 2025 with 11.12 K/9 and 3.57 BB/9, leaving home runs as his biggest issue. If he can reduce the amount of loud contact he surrenders in 2026, he can return to being one of MLB's top closers while delivering high-leverage innings for a competitive baseball team. In the short term, he'll have a similarly important role pitching out of the USA's bullpen as the WBC continues.
