Kerry Carpenter to Start a Rehab Assignment on Friday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) will start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Friday, according to MLive Media Group's Evan Woodbery. Carpenter was cleared to resume playing in games after he took part in right-hander Justin Verlander's (hip) simulated game on Wednesday. If he can avoid any setbacks this weekend, Carpenter could be reinstated from the 10-day injured list to rejoin the Tigers' starting lineup at some point early next week. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder has been on the shelf for just under three weeks with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Before his injury, Carpenter was batting a disappointing .216 (22-for-102) with six home runs, 17 RBI, 11 runs scored, 11 walks, and 40 strikeouts across 37 games (117 plate appearances). He won't offer much speed and strikes out too much to be an asset in on-base-percentage leagues, but Carpenter proved last year with his career-high 26 homers that he can help in the power department against right-handed pitchers. He's currently rostered in just under 40% of Yahoo leagues.

Kerry Carpenter Facing Live Pitching, Rehab Assignment Could Come Soon

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) is taking live at-bats in a simulated game against right-hander Justin Verlander (hip) on Wednesday, according to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News. It's a good sign that Carpenter is close to being ready to go on a minor-league rehab assignment. It was the first time that Carpenter had seen live pitching since he was placed on the 10-day injured list in early May with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. If the 29-year-old starts a rehab assignment on the farm soon and avoids any setbacks with his shoulder, he could return to the big-league roster by early June. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder was hitting only .216 (22-for-102) at the time of his injury with six home runs and 17 RBI in his first 37 games of 2026, but he proved last year that he's capable of plenty of power production for fantasy managers, clubbing a career-best 26 homers and driving in 62 in 130 regular-season games. Carpenter is a stash candidate for those looking for a boost in power going forward, and he's rostered in only 39% of Yahoo leagues.

Kerry Carpenter Making Progress, Could Face Live Pitching on Wednesday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) hit in a cage at "near full speed" on Tuesday and could take live batting practice on Wednesday, per MLB.com. The 28-year-old has been on the 10-day injured list since early May due to an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder, but it appears as though he's making good progress and could go out on a minor league rehab assignment in short order. Carpenter was off to a bit of a slow start to the 2026 season before the injury, hitting .216/.299/.451 with six home runs, 17 RBI, and 11 runs scored across 117 plate appearances. However, the veteran slugger hit 26 home runs in just 464 plate appearances in 2025 and owns a 12.4% barrel rate. Assuming his shoulder gets back to full strength and does not impact his production once he returns to the big leagues, Carpenter profiles as a viable power bat for fantasy managers to target on the waiver wire.

Kerry Carpenter Making Good Progress, Return Could Come Quickly

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder), who is currently on the 10-day injured list with a shoulder injury, has been doing some light running and throwing and expects to resume swinging a bat this week, according to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News. The 28-year-old sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder back on May 9, which is something he also did in 2023, which caused him to miss six weeks. His shoulder injury this time around appears to be healing much quicker, though. Once he resumes swinging a bat, Carpenter should be cleared to go out on a minor-league rehab assignment shortly after that, giving him a chance to return to the Tigers' lineup before the calendar flips to June. The former 19th-round pick in 2019 had a career-high 26 home runs and drove in 62 in a career-high 130 games for Detroit last year in his fourth season in the big leagues, and he's had at least 18 long balls in each of the last three years. Carpenter is currently rostered in 40% of Yahoo leagues as he tries to recover from his shoulder sprain.

Kerry Carpenter Placed on 10-Day Injured List with Left AC Joint Sprain

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left AC joint sprain. Infielder Gage Workman was recalled to take Carpenter's spot on Detroit's active roster. Carpenter exited early from the Tigers' loss to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday after colliding with the outfield wall and could now be facing an extended absence. Across his first 117 plate appearances of 2026 before getting injured, the 28-year-old was hitting .216/.299/.451 with six home runs, 17 RBI, and 11 runs scored. While Carpenter may be able to return to the Tigers relatively quickly, his performance post-shoulder ailment will be something for fantasy managers to monitor. In Carpenter's absence, Tigers outfielders Wenceel Perez and Jahmai Jones could both see an increase in playing time in right field and at designated hitter.

Kerry Carpenter Exits Early with Shoulder Injury

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) was forced to make an early exit from Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Carpenter injured his left shoulder when he slammed into the wall attempting to make a play in the first inning. He remained in the game but was ultimately taken out in the third inning due to left shoulder soreness. Before exiting, Carpenter was 1-for-1 during his lone plate appearance on Saturday. Wenceel Perez replaced him in the ballgame and figures to see more starts if Carpenter is forced to miss time. Fantasy managers should consider Carpenter as day-to-day until more information is revealed.

Kerry Carpenter Back From Illness

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (illness) is feeling better and is starting in right field and batting cleanup for Detroit on Wednesday on the road against the division-rival Minnesota Twins and right-hander Bailey Ober, according to MLB.com. Carpenter didn't start in each of the last two games due to a stomach illness, but he was used as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday. Now that the 28-year-old left-handed hitter is feeling better, he'll attempt to dig himself out of an early-season funk at the plate. The former 19th-round pick in 2019 has gone 6-for-32 (.188) with two home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored while walking five times and striking out 16 times in just 38 plate appearances over 10 games played. Carpenter has plenty of experience against Ober, hitting .267 against him with an .886 OPS, a home run, and three RBI in 15 career at-bats, so perhaps this matchup is just what the doctor ordered for the struggling outfielder.

Kevin McGonigle Hitting Second, Kerry Carpenter Dropped to Fifth

Detroit Tigers infield prospect Kevin McGonigle is starting at shortstop and will bat out of the two-hole on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks and right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, while designated hitter Kerry Carpenter is being dropped to the fifth spot in the batting order, according to MLB.com. Third baseman Colt Keith will be the club's leadoff hitter at Chase Field. McGonigle, only 21 years old, hasn't looked like a rookie in his first four games, going 5-for-14 (.357) with two doubles, four RBI, three runs scored, three walks, and three strikeouts. He has quickly demanded a move up the batting order, which will only raise his fantasy ceiling in 2026. Tuesday will be McGonigle's first time in the two-hole in his career after batting sixth for Detroit to begin the season. Carpenter, meanwhile, has one hit in 16 at-bats with 10 strikeouts in his first four games. Perhaps Carpenter can get going on Tuesday, as he's 2-for-3 in his career versus Pfaadt. McGonigle is already rostered in 82% of Yahoo leagues.

Kerry Carpenter Continues to Shine as Impact Power Bat

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter has showcased impressive power through his first three-plus MLB seasons, and he'll look to continue that trend in 2026. The biggest concern for Carpenter at this point in his career is the injury risk, as he played 130 games last year -- and even that mark was a career high. If he can stay healthy, though, he has 30-plus-homer potential with an everyday spot in the Tigers' lineup. Other factors to consider with Carpenter include handedness splits and his K/BB ratio. He had an OPS of .812 against righties last year, but just .638 against lefties. Additionally, only three of his 26 home runs came against southpaws. Furthermore, he shaved his strikeout rate down to a career-best 22.8%, but he also dropped his walk rate to a career-worst 3.9%. His 5.85 K/BB ratio was the worst mark of his career, and while a discipline drop-off is expected when a player improves their power numbers, fantasy managers would like to see him at least walk a little more. Carpenter isn't one of the flashiest names among power hitters, but he's still an impact power bat against right-handed pitching with tremendous upside if he can stay healthy. He's somewhat of a value pick at the moment, ranking #57 among RotoBaller's outfielders for 2026 with an ADP of 217.

Kerry Carpenter Activated and Starting on Sunday

The Detroit Tigers activated outfielder Kerry Carpenter (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list on Sunday and optioned infielder Trey Sweeney to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Carpenter is starting in right field and batting third in his return for Sunday's series finale against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander Max Scherzer. Now that the 27-year-old is back from a three-week stay on the injured list due to a strained right hamstring, he should play regularly for the Tigers in the outfield or at designated hitter. The left-handed hitter will return to a .257/.285/.494 slash line with 16 home runs, 32 RBI, 40 runs and one stolen base for the first-place Tigers. Carpenter has been injury-prone and has his issues against left-handed pitchers, but there's no disputing his power or the fact that he hits the ball pretty hard when he makes contact.
