Reese Olson Won't Pitch in 2026

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (right shoulder) has been ruled out for the entire 2026 season after undergoing labral repair surgery, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. He was officially placed on the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. Olson battled multiple injuries last year and ultimately made just 13 starts. He missed a month and a half during the early portion of the season due to ring finger inflammation, and then he was sidelined from late July through the end of the season due to his shoulder issue. Across 68.2 innings of work, he posted a 3.50 FIP with 8.52 K/9, 3.28 BB/9, and 0.66 HR/9. His long-term absence provides a better explanation for why Detroit signed veteran starter Justin Verlander to a one-year deal on Tuesday. Verlander should replace Olson as the Tigers' No. 4 starter entering the 2026 season, barring any other unforeseen transactions or injuries.

Reese Olson Might Not be Ready for Opening Day

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (shoulder) might not be ready for the beginning of the regular season, according to Evan Petzold. Olson went down in July due to a strained shoulder and never returned to the mound. He reportedly began throwing in December, but doesn't appear quite ready to pitch yet. If Olson does miss time, Troy Melton is the most likely candidate to take his spot in the starting rotation. Before going down last season, Olson posted a 3.15 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and a 65/25 K/BB ratio in 13 starts. He has been a viable pitcher when healthy, but hasn't pitched more than 22 games since making his debut in 2023. The Tigers should give a better timetable on Olson once Spring Training ramps up.

Reese Olson Expected to be Ready for Spring Training

Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) is on track to be ready for spring training after suffering a season-ending right-shoulder strain last year, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. Olson was shut down in late July and didn't pitch again in 2025. The 26-year-old went 4-4 with a career-low 3.15 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 65 strikeouts and 25 walks in 68 2/3 innings over his 13 starts. He hasn't exceeded 112 innings in his three years in the big leagues with the Tigers, but he has a solid 3.60 ERA (3.55 FIP) and 1.17 WHIP with a 23% strikeout rate and 7.8% walk rate in 284 2/3 total innings. Olson should have a rotation spot locked up in 2026 and has proven he can be a pretty reliable starting option for fantasy managers. If Olson can stay healthy, a step forward in his fourth big-league season is possible. He's ranked as the No. 86 starting pitcher at RotoBaller.

Reese Olson Begins Throwing Progression

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (shoulder) has begun a return-to-play throwing progression. It's unclear if and when he will pitch again in 2025, but the belief is that he will be able to contribute to the Tigers in some capacity in the playoffs. The 26-year-old went to the injured list at the end of July with a right shoulder strain. After it was determined that he wouldn't require surgery to repair his ailing shoulder, he received a platelet-rich plasma injection. Since then, he has been shut down from throwing until now, as he will begin to ramp up his arm again. The hope and belief is that he will be healthy and ready for Spring Training next year.

Reese Olson Receives PRP Injection

Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) has already been ruled out to return to the mound this year. Olson will not require surgery for his right shoulder strain, but was given a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection for his shoulder. A PRP injection involves using the player's blood, spinning it down, and reinjecting the "good stuff" back into the affected joint in hopes of speeding up healing time. If this works, surgery will remain off the table for the 26-year-old. He did pitch well in his 13 starts this season, going (4-4) with 65 strikeouts in 68 innings to the tune of an ERA of 3.15 and WHIP of 1.21. Olson looks to be healthy going into spring training in 2026 and is ready to build off of this year.

Reese Olson Avoids Having Surgery

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (shoulder) will avoid having surgery on his injured right shoulder, according to Cody Stavenhagen. The Tigers are still waiting for the final results on his most recent medical evaluation. They will wait until then before deciding on the next steps for Olson. The right-hander is expected to miss the rest of the regular season, but is hopeful to pitch in the postseason. Fantasy managers who were holding Olson can safely drop him.

Chris Paddack Set for Tigers Debut Wednesday

The Detroit Tigers have activated right-hander Chris Paddack, who will make his team debut Wednesday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Paddack was acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a deal that also included right-hander Randy Dobnak, with catching prospect Enrique Jimenez going the other way. Through 21 starts this season, Paddack posted a 4.95 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a .266 opponents average. He takes the rotation spot of Reese Olson, who is expected to miss the rest of the season with a shoulder strain. Paddack is in his seventh major league season and owns a career 4.49 ERA.

Reese Olson Out for Rest of Regular Season

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (shoulder) was placed on the 60-day injured list on Monday. This move means Olson will be sidelined at least through the rest of the regular season. It is possible that Olson makes a return for the postseason, but he can safely be dropped in fantasy formats. Olson didn't appear to be dealing with an injury, but a shoulder strain might explain his lack of command during his most recent outing. He'll finish the season with a 3.15 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and a 65/25 K/BB ratio across 13 starts. Newly acquired Chris Paddack figures to take over the vacant spot in the starting rotation.

Reese Olson to Open Second Half of Season and Start on Friday

The Detroit Tigers' tentative plan for the second half of the season, which begins on Friday, July 18, in Texas against the Rangers, is for right-hander Reese Olson to open the series on Friday and left-hander Tarik Skubal to go on Sunday in the series finale. If right-hander Casey Mize doesn't pitch in the All-Star game this week, then he would toe the rubber for Game 2 at Globe Life Field on Saturday. If Mize does pitch in the Midsummer Classic, right-hander Keider Montero could start on Saturday, or the team could go with a bullpen game. Olson has settled for no-decisions in his two starts back from the injured list but has been solid, allowing three earned runs on 12 hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out four in 9 1/3 innings against the Guardians and Rays. He's sporting an ERA under 3.00 on the year and should be started against Texas next Friday to kick off the second half.

Reese Olson Activated and Starting on Friday

The Detroit Tigers activated right-hander Reese Olson (finger) from the 10-day injured list on Friday and optioned outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Olson is starting Friday's series opener in Cleveland against the division-rival Guardians. The 25-year-old is returning to an ERA under 3.00 and is worth a waiver-wire pickup in deep-mixed leagues if available, but he won't come recommended as a fantasy starter in his first game back. He made three minor-league rehab starts but only got built up to four innings in his final start at Toledo on June 25. The good news is that Olson will be facing a slumping Guardians squad that has the third-lowest OPS (.660) in the big leagues entering play on Friday. Olson's xERA of 3.54 means he could be due some regression in the second half, although his FIP does sit at a strong 2.95.
