Chuba Hubbard Considered Week-to-Week With Hamstring Injury

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury in training camp and is considered week-to-week, head coach Dave Canales told Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer. Rico Dowdle is out of town in 2026, which set up Hubbard to lead Carolina's backfield. However, a hamstring injury could potentially threaten the 27-year-old's availability for the start of the 2026 regular season, which means that RB2 Jonathon Brooks, who has played in just three games in the NFL since entering the league in 2024 due to two torn ACLs, will become much more interesting as a breakout candidate in 2026. After his first 1,000-yard season with the Panthers in 2024, Hubbard rushed for only 511 yards and one touchdown on 134 carries last year while losing out on work to Dowdle, who was the much more efficient and explosive back. Hubbard still has time to get ready for Week 1 in September, but his hamstring injury will certainly make him a riskier RB3/flex option in upcoming fantasy football drafts.

Chuba Hubbard Remains the Projected Lead Back in Carolina

There has been plenty of hype surrounding Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks so far in training camp now that he looks fully healthy, but Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer also reports that "it's Chuba Hubbard's world he's living in." With that said, Kaye also thinks Brooks has "looked sharp." "He's cutting well, showing impressive hands, and I think he's gaining a rhythm out there." Brooks could be a thorn in Hubbard's side in 2026 if he stays healthy, but Rico Dowdle is gone, and the Panthers will open the regular season with Hubbard as the clear leader of their backfield. However, the 27-year-old former fourth-rounder in 2021 from Oklahoma State has work to do after a disappointing 2025 season in which he had 134 carries for 511 yards and one rushing touchdown in 15 regular-season games. It was a massive disappointment after Hubbard reached the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career in 2024. Most of Hubbard's 2026 fantasy value derives from the fact that he's Carolina's RB1, but without a ton of pass-catching upside, he's vulnerable to Brooks and should be considered a low-end RB2/high-end RB3/flex target going into upcoming drafts.

Chuba Hubbard a Low-Upside Pick in the Middle Rounds of 2026 Drafts

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard has proven fully capable of handling lead back responsibilities, but without any special elements to his profile, he has no guarantees of holding onto the role once challenged for it. In an injury-plagued 2025 season, he was overtaken on the depth chart by Rico Dowdle, and now with Dowdle out the door in free agency, he'll face competition from 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks. A series of serious knee injuries have limited Brooks to only nine total carries in his professional career, but he comes into year three as healthy as he's been since the start of his final collegiate season, and he represents the much higher ceiling out of the Panthers backfield. Hubbard and Brooks are going within four running back spots of one another by current ADP, and while Hubbard will likely see the opportunity to begin the season in a starting role, his grasp on the job should be considered tentative. As RotoBaller's RB28, the sixth-year veteran has fallen to an area of drafts where fantasy managers would be better suited taking higher-upside swings, and coincidentally, one such candidate can be found in Hubbard's own running back room.

Should Chuba Hubbard Be Targeted at his Current ADP?

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard was one of the biggest surprises in fantasy in 2024, racking up 1,366 yards and 11 touchdowns in a season that would earn him a four-year, $33 million extension with the team. Injuries and inconsistency derailed his 2025 campaign, and he finished the year as the clear backup to Rico Dowdle, handling double-digit carries only one time after Week 8. With Dowdle departing in free agency and the Panthers making no significant additions to the position, Hubbard potentially faces a training camp battle with 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks. Reports out of the non-padded setting of minicamp praised Brooks for the explosiveness he's recaptured since an ACL tear ended his rookie season, but it's important to remember the injury was the second of its kind in 13 months, sandwiched around only nine professional carries. It's extremely unlikely that Brooks would step fully into Dowdle's vacated role and inherit the bulk of his 282 opportunities from a season ago. With Hubbard now also nearly ten months removed from the calf injury that landed him on injured reserve and reportedly tested his confidence upon his return, a split backfield in Carolina could lead to one of the league's more ambiguous situations and depressed ADPs for both players. Neither Hubbard nor Brooks is currently being drafted within the top 30 of the position, and with Dave Canales producing a top 16 fantasy back in each of his three seasons calling plays for Carolina and Tampa Bay, the opportunity is there for one or both to return difference-making value in 2026.

Chuba Hubbard a Worthy Trade Target With his Dynasty Cost Driven Down

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard is no stranger to ambiguous backfields, but what he faces heading into the 2026 season may be the most unsettled room of his six-year career. Conflicting reports seem to emerge almost weekly about how Hubbard and unproven third-year back Jonathon Brooks will split work. Brooks was a second-round pick and the first running back off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft, while Hubbard was given a four-year, $33 million extension that same year after Brooks tore his right ACL for the second time in just over a year. With Brooks sitting out the entire 2025 season, Hubbard was slowed by his own nagging ailments and eventually overtaken in the starting role by Rico Dowdle, who has since signed a two-year deal with the Steelers. While Brooks has arguably the brighter future in Carolina, uncertainty about how things might look in 2026 has driven down the cost of both players, and at RotoBaller's dynasty RB33, the 27-year-old Hubbard is an affordable trade target who could offer depth and a number of usable starts for contending managers.

Chuba Hubbard's Dynasty Value Back on the Rise

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard has seen his dynasty value fluctuate wildly since coming into the league as a fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma State in the 2021 NFL Draft. After beginning his career as a backup to Christian McCaffrey, Hubbard broke out with an RB15 finish in 2024 in a year that most presumed the Carolina backfield would run through second-round pick Jonathon Brooks. With Brooks missing the entire 2025 season after re-tearing the ACL in his right knee, presumptions shifted again, and Hubbard came into the year as the RB19 in consensus dynasty rankings. Unfortunately, injuries and inefficiency saw him take a backseat to Rico Dowdle for much of the year while he averaged less than four yards per carry and fell as low as RB42 in those same rankings. With Dowdle signing a two-year deal with the Steelers in free agency, lead back duties in Carolina again appear to belong to Hubbard. That said, little has gone as planned for Panthers running backs of late, and Brooks should be close to full health to begin a season for the first time in his professional career. Hubbard is in the second season of the four-year extension he signed in 2024, and while the team could save $6 million by moving on from him before 2027, he appears to be part of the team's plans both presently and moving forward. At RotoBaller's dynasty RB33, the soon-to-be-27-year-old sixth-year veteran finally feels appropriately priced.

Chuba Hubbard a Prime Bounce-Back Candidate Following Offseason Moves

After logging 1,366 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns in 2024, Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard saw his production dip in 2025. Across 15 games, the 26-year-old recorded just 734 scrimmage yards and four scores. Hubbard opened the year as the Panthers RB1, but an early-season injury opened the door for Rico Dowdle to take over the lead rusher role in Carolina. However, Dowdle signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March, which could provide Hubbard an opportunity to reassume a three-down role. The Panthers did not add any running backs in the 2026 NFL Draft, leaving the oft-injured Jonathan Brooks and the unproven Trevor Etienne as Hubbard's primary competition. In dynasty formats, Hubbard's stock is rising following Carolina's offseason moves.

Chuba Hubbard Set to Re-Emerge as a Top-24 Running Back?

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard opened the 2025 season as his team's RB1. However, an early-season calf injury forced Hubbard to the sidelines and opened the door for Rico Dowdle to emerge as Carolina's new feature back. While Hubbard worked his way back into a more even playing time split down the stretch of the season, he finished the year with just 734 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns on 164 touches. Luckily for Hubbard, Dowdle signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency, reopening the door for Hubbard to get his starting role back. The 26-year-old Hubbard is just one year removed from his breakout 2024 campaign with Carolina, when he racked up 1,366 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns on 293 touches. Hubbard's dynasty value is firmly trending upwards heading into 2026.

Has Chuba Hubbard Reclaimed the RB1 Role in Carolina?

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard was one of the breakout success stories of the 2024 season, recording 1,366 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns on 293 touches across 15 games. However, Hubbard missed time early in the 2025 season with a calf injury and had his starting job usurped by fellow back Rico Dowdle. Hubbard finished the year with just 734 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns on 164 touches across 15 games played. Still, Hubbard may have a chance to reclaim the RB1 role in Carolina in 2026, as Dowdle recently departed the Panthers for the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency. Barring any further backfield additions, Hubbard's main competition in Carolina appears to be Jonathan Brooks and Trevor Etienne, who have combined for 29 career carries so far in their NFL careers. If Hubbard finds his way back to the usage he saw in 2024, he could easily re-emerge as a viable fantasy running back in 2026.

Chuba Hubbard a Fantasy Winner to Start Free Agency

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard was one of 2024's most successful fantasy breakouts, finishing his fourth professional season as the RB15, but 2025 brought hardships in the form of injuries and a frustrating timeshare with Rico Dowdle. With Dowdle now agreeing to a two-year pact with the Steelers in the opening hours of the NFL's legal tampering window, Hubbard again finds himself with a chance to claim the top spot on the depth chart. After a day in which the Panthers committed to spending big on the defensive side of the ball, the running backs' room is left with Hubbard, the oft-injured Jonathon Brooks, and 2025 fourth-round pick Trevor Etienne. If the team believes in the receiving prowess of Brooks and Etienne, this very well could be the trio they enter the 2026 season with, perhaps with the addition of a late-round depth piece from a rookie class not necessarily touted for the strength of its running back group.
