The Carolina Panthers signed former Las Vegas Raiders safety Tre'von Moehrig to a three-year, $51 million deal on Monday, according to FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz. Moehrig will head to the NFC South for the next three years after coming off a career year with the Raiders in 2024 in which he had a career-best 104 tackles (64 solo), one sack, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, 10 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in 17 starts. The 25-year-old defensive back's new deal ensures he'll be a starter in 2025 in his first year in Carolina after the Panthers made former first-round cornerback Jaycee Horn the highest-paid defensive back in the league on Monday. Moehrig was taken in the second round by Vegas in 2021 out of TCU, and he had 297 tackles (202) solo, three sacks, eight tackles for loss, five QB hits, six picks, 29 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in his first four seasons.
Raiders Unlikely To Use Franchise Tag On Tre'von Moehrig
Las Vegas Raiders impending free-agent safety Tre'von Moehrig is expected to generate plenty of interest in free agency this offseason after recording career-highs in tackles (104), pass breakups (10) and QB hits (three) in 17 starts in his fourth year in the NFL with the Raiders. Moehrig is among the free agents that the Raiders would like to re-sign, but the franchise tag for safeties in 2025 will be close to $20 million, which is more than his projected market value, writes ESPN's Ryan McFadden. The Raiders have only used the franchise tag six times in club history, and they won't be making it seven with the 25-year-old defensive back. A second-round pick (43rd overall) in 2021 out of TCU, Moehrig has 297 total tackles (202 solo), three sacks, eight tackles for loss, five QB hits, six interceptions, 29 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in his four years in Vegas.
Tre'von Moehrig Expected To Draw Significant Interest During Free Agency
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Las Vegas Raiders safety Tre'von Moehrig is expected to draw significant interest on the open market. Fowler noted that multiple evaluators believe that Moehrig's film "is the best of any free agent safety" and that the Raiders will have a "hard time keeping him." The TCU product enjoyed a career season in 2024. Moehrig tallied a career-high 104 tackles (64 solo) with 40 assists. He added one sack, two interceptions, 10 pass deflections, and two fumble recoveries. This was a solid improvement compared to the 83 tackles and 18 assists he logged during the 2023 campaign. Despite winning just four games this season, the Raiders defended the pass well, allowing the 15th-fewest passing yards per game (216.2). If Moehrig were to walk in free agency, Thomas Harper would be slated to move up the depth chart.
Tre'von Moehrig Impressing Ahead Of Rookie Campaign
Las Vegas Raiders safety Tre'von Moehrig has had an immediate impact during training camp and setting himself up for an impressive rookie season. That impact was on display during a scrimmage with the LA Rams this week when the 25-year-old free safety picked off a Matt Stafford pass just two plays into the day. The TCU product made 47 tackles (two for losses) and two interceptions during his junior year, which was shortened to 10 games in 2020 because of COVID-19. Even with fourth-year player Dallin Leavitt in the mix, Moehrig's camp has him sitting atop the Raiders' depth chart heading into the second weekend of preseason games.
