Drew Sample A Sneaky Option In Week 3

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Drew Sample caught seven of his nine targets for 45 yards against the Browns in Week 2. Although it's unlikely that rookie quarterback Joe Burrow will throw 61 passes against the Eagles as he did against Cleveland, the sophomore will likely be in line for an uptick in production after Cincy lost C.J. Uzomah (Achilles) for the remainder of the 2020 campaign. While Sample probably can't be depended on for consistent production moving ahead, he is a suitable dart throw for those in need of a tight end in Week 3 and the remainder of the year.

Arrow Pointing Upward For Drew Sample

The Cincinnati Bengals have high expectations for tight end Drew Sample to take a "significant jump" in his second year with the team, especially with Tyler Eifert no longer in town. Sample caught just five passes on six targets for 30 yards in nine games (two starts) in his rookie season and he was drafted as mostly a blocking tight end. C.J. Uzomah will be the team's primary pass-catcher at the position, but Sample will inevitably see more snaps on offense and should see his offensive numbers take a sizeable rise over his rookie season. The soon-to-be 24-year-old former second-round pick could become interesting in dynasty/keeper leagues with the Bengals expected to take LSU QB Joe Burrow with the first overall pick later this month.

Andy Dalton Admires Drew Sample

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has been impressed with rookie tight end Drew Sample so far in offseason workouts. "Hes picked up on things quickly," said Dalton. "Hes what you want in a tight end. 'Polished,' is a good word for him." Sample was the best blocking tight end in the draft, but pass-catching isn't his best trait. He's a physical, tough player but will also have to contend with Tyler Eifert (if healthy) and C.J. Uzomah in the passing game. Sample could develop into a decent pass-catcher in time, but he won't be one to target in redraft leagues.
