Commanders Could Move On From Jonathan Allen After This Season
Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, has two years left on a four-year, $72 million contract extension he signed in 2021. However, the remaining seasons include zero guaranteed dollars. There's a potentially incompatible $23 million salary cap hit in 2025, with only $6 million in dead cap. Washington drafted defensive tackle Johnny Newton in the second round this year, meaning there's a potential Allen replacement on the roster should another extension or restructure not be in the cards before the 2025 season. A knee injury kept Allen from playing in the season finale last year, but the 29-year-old took part in OTAs this offseason and should be ready for Week 1 this fall. The former 17th overall pick in 2017 out of Alabama dipped to 5.5 sacks in 2023 after recording 16.5 sacks the two previous seasons.
Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (knee) has been participating in the team's organized team activities this spring and has been extremely happy with the team's new regime change in the front office and on the sidelines. Allen said months ago that he didn't want to be part of another rebuild, but the long-time defensive captain is thrilled with how things are unfolding under new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn. Following Pro Bowl nods in 2021 and 2022, Allen had 53 tackles (30 solo), 5.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 19 QB hits in 16 starts. The 29-year-old former 17th overall pick in 2017 out of Alabama has no more guaranteed money left on his deal, which has two years remaining. It's unclear how Allen's role on defense might change in 2024 under Quinn.
Jonathan Allen Could Eventually Be On The Trade Block
The Washington Commanders took Illinois defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton on Day 2 of this year's NFL draft, giving the team three talented tackles in Newton and Pro Bowlers Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. A few league executives are now wondering if Washington will ever consider trade offers for Allen, who is due $15.4 million in 2024 and $16.5 million next year, both figures below market for high-end tackles. Sources believe the Commanders will either need to rework Allen's contract eventually or decide whether they will entertain trade offers, which they have so far rebuffed in the past. For now, head coach Dan Quinn can concoct a plan to get all three defensive tackles on the field. The 29-year-old Allen finished last year with 53 tackles (30 solo), 5.5 sacks and a pass defended in 16 games. Because of his struggles last year defending the run, perhaps he's moved outside more after the addition of Newton.
Washington Commanders defensive lineman Jonathan Allen (knee) has been ruled out for the remainder of Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns. He failed to amass a tackle before exiting the contest. Efe Obada and John Ridgeway should see more snaps in his absence.
Washington Commanders defensive lineman Jonathan Allen (knee) is questionable to return against the Cleveland Browns in Week 17. He failed to amass a tackle before exiting the contest. Efe Obada and John Ridgeway should see more snaps in his absence.
Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (groin) is active for Week 2 against the Detroit Lions despite being listed as questionable. He played just 54 percent of snaps due to injury last week but was still productive, tallying three tackles and one sack. Through 17 games in 2021, he registered 62 tackles and nine sacks. The 27-year-old's presence will create an obstacle for the Detroit offense on Sunday.
Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (groin) has been added to the team's injury report as questionable ahead of their Week 2 matchup with the Detroit Lions. Allen suffered a groin injury in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars but there has been no indication that it is anything serious. The Pro Bowler was a full participant in Friday's practice after being limited on both Wednesday and Thursday, so it would be a surprise to see him ruled out. The expectation is that Allen will still suit up on Sunday.
Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat Return From COVID List
The Washington Football Team activated defensive ends Montez Sweat (jaw), James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohill and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen from the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. Sweat, who was on Injured Reserve with a broken jaw before going on the COVID list, has been designated to return and could play on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's a huge boost for Washington's defensive line in Week 15 and a slight downgrade for the Eagles offense and running game against their division rivals. Washington's rush defense has been strong this year, allowing just 93.6 yards on the ground per game, good for fifth-best in the NFL. Despite the reinforcements, there are plenty of better defensive units to run out in starting lineups this week in fantasy.
Washington Signs Jonathan Allen To Four-Year Extension
The Washington Football Team has signed defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to a four-year, $72 million contract extension. Allen will be a key piece to one of the best defensive lines in football, which includes the likes of Chase Young, Daron Payne and Montez Sweat. The 2017 first-round pick has played in all but one game since the 2018 season, and he is coming off a season where he registered two sacks, 63 tackles (36 solo), 14 quarterback hits and one fumble recovery. Washington will be bringing back an elite defense that carried them to a division title in the 2020 season and will look to repeat as division champions with their improved offense.
The Washington Redskins exercised their fifth-year option on defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. The option keeps him under contract through the 2021 season. Allen was a first-round pick in 2017 (17th overall) and has been solid in his professional career but has certainly not lived up to his draft position. He's recorded 14 sacks in the past two seasons. He has been good at staying on the field though, playing in 15 games last year and in all 16 the year before.
