Jalen Hurts Working Out With DeSean Jackson

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts has been working out with teammate DeSean Jackson. Hurts posted videos on his Instagram account on Monday, showing the second-rounder working out in Florida with the veteran wide receiver. Jackson is recovering from core muscle surgery and Hurts is trying to impress his coaches after coach Doug Pederson (somewhat) recently said Hurts, "needs to learn and pick up our system." Hurts is expected to begin the season as the number three quarterback behind starter Carson Wentz and 2016 sixth-rounder Nate Sudfeld, but the Eagles certainly didn't spend a second round pick to draft a third string quarterback. Hurts may be a direct backup for the somewhat oft-injured Wentz, or he may end up seeing work in something more like a Taysom Hill role. There's a wide range of outcomes for Hurts this season and going forward.

Eagles Likely To Be Conservative With Jalen Hurts

While many think that Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts could be used as a package player this year, NJ Advance Media's Mike Kaye is wary of that role, at least early in Hurts' rookie campaign. The Eagles see Hurts as a genuine QB, so they're likely to take a conservative approach with his development. Philly has also shown patience with most of their rookies during the Doug Pederson era. Hurts also isn't getting a typical offseason to grow within the offense because of restrictions surrounding COVID-19. The Eagles don't have to force Hurts onto the field with Nate Sudfeld a capable backup to Carson Wentz. So while Hurts has the potential to be a dynamic weapon in the NFL, his development is likely to progress slowly, making him only a stash option in dynasty/keeper leagues in 2020.

Jalen Hurts Needs To Pick Up Eagles System

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said that the team will need to rely on veterans like backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld early in the season because of the restrictions on offseason programs and organized team activities due to COVID-19. "I have a ton of confidence in Nate becoming our backup QB," Pederson said. The head coach also said that rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts needs to "learn and pick up our system." It'll be even tougher for rookies like Hurts to hit the ground running when training camps begin because of offseason restrictions, making it more likely that Sudfeld is the direct backup to Carson Wentz, at least early in the season. Hurts could see some packages as a gadget player early on, but that's about as much as we can hope for right off the bat. He's strictly a dynasty/keeper investment in 2020 fantasy leagues.
