Johnny Mundt News
Minnesota Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt caught three passes for 17 yards in the team's Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers. Irv Smith Jr. was held to zero receptions on just two targets. Smith Jr. finished behind five players in terms of target volume, so moving forward he doesn't seem like a reliable option for fantasy managers. Still, Smith Jr. hasn't played a game since the 2020 season so a slow start doesn't come as a surprise. He should be treated as the Vikings TE1 moving forward despite Mundt outperforming him in the season opener.
After mostly serving as a blocker and catching just 10 passes in five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt (knee) expects to be used as more of a pass-catcher as the primary backup to Irv Smith Jr. in 2022. Mundt has been working on the side during offseason practices after recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered last October. But the 27-year-old's recovery is "going great" and he'll be "ready to go during training camp" in late July. Mundt followed coaches Kevin O'Connell and Wes Phillips to Minnesota, and the Vikings are expected to use him much more as a pass-catcher. However, unless Smith suffers an injury, Mundt is unlikely to have a ton of fantasy value.
Los Angeles Rams rookie running back Jake Funk (hamstring) and backup tight end Johnny Mundt (knee) will both go on Injured Reserve, according to head coach Sean McVay. Funk tore his hamstring in the Week 6 win over the New York Giants, while Mundt tore his ACL. Mundt will undergo season-ending surgery, while surgery has also been recommended for Funk. Mundt had been serving as the blocking tight end behind Tyler Higbee and had just one catch on the season. Jacob Harris will now serve as the immediate backup behind Higbee for the rest of the year. Funk had just one carry for six yards in his first six NFL games behind Darrell Henderson Jr. and Sony Michel, and he'll now miss the rest of his rookie season.
