James Conner May Not Return After This Season

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner could be playing his final year with the club in 2020, according to Cody Flavell of Sports Illustrated. With Conner's health seemingly always in question for one reason or another and the organization looking to save cash for other signings beyond the season, Flavell believes Pittsburgh may not be willing to give the 25-year-old the money required to retain his services. Conner finished 2019 with 464 yards and four touchdowns and battled a shoulder issue that relegated him to only 10 games. While the return of Ben Roethlisberger could open up the run game throughout the season, the fourth-year man could see a slightly reduced workload after the team drafted Anthony McFarland Jr. in the NFL Draft during the offseason.

James Conner Wants Steelers To Run The Ball Better

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner isn't worried about how many carries he gets heading into the 2020 season. Head coach Mike Tomlin has historically leaned heavily on a single back during his time in Pittsburgh but there have been some questions as to whether he will do so in 2020 considering Conner's injury history. Conner told reporters that he expects the Steelers to run the ball better this upcoming season. "We need to establish our run game first and foremost," he told reporters. Conner will open the season as the team's No. 1 running back and he could wind up as a value in fantasy drafts if he's able to turn in a full 16-game season.

James Conner Not Worried About Health After Cancer Scare

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner, who is a cancer survivor, isn't worried about COVID-19 when teams eventually return to the field prior to the 2020 season. "I'm 100%," Conner said. "I had a weak immune system four years ago. It's not weak anymore, thank God. I'm OK. I'm young and healthy. I went through what I went through." The 25-year-old had Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in 2015 and was declared cancer-free in May of 2016. Conner was a Pro Bowler in 2018, but he's played in just 37 games in his three seasons because of injuries and just isn't reliable as an RB1 because of that. The Steelers could also choose to spread out the carries more to keep Conner healthy in 2020, which would obviously hurt his overall upside. Draft him as a low-end RB2 with upside for more if he can just stay on the field.
