Austin Gomber Placed on Outright Waivers

The Colorado Rockies have placed left-hander Austin Gomber on outright waivers, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. After missing the first two-plus months of the season with shoulder soreness, the 31-year-old debuted June 15 and has registered disastrous results over 12 starts. Gomber has gone 0-7 with a 7.49 ERA, a 1.72 WHIP, and 34:17 K:BB in 57 2/3 innings. With Gomber on a $6.35 million salary and owed around $1.33 million for the rest of the season, it seems unlikely that another team will claim him. If no one does, the Rockies will have the option of keeping him on their roster. Even if Colorado retains Gomber through the season, he's facing an uncertain future as a soon-to-be free agent. Also a former St. Louis Cardinal, Gomber joined the Rockies in a February 2021 blockbuster trade that centered on then-superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado. The soft-tossing Gomber has made 125 appearances (109 starts) with the Rockies and gone 28-44 with a 5.31 ERA, 6.66 K/9, and 2.59 BB/9 across 601 2/3 innings.

Austin Gomber Activated Ahead of Season Debut

The Colorado Rockies have activated left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber (shoulder) off the 60-day injured list prior to his season debut on Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Braves. Gomber has been sidelined through the opening months of the campaign due to shoulder soreness. While he was initially expected to only miss a brief period, this injury began to linger. With Gomber reuniting, the Rockies shifted right-handed pitcher Ryan Feltner (back) to the 60-day IL and optioned right-handed pitcher Zach Agnos to Triple-A. Last season, Gomber logged 165 innings to the tune of a 4.75 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP. Across this stint, Gomber struck out just 116 batters and posted a solid 5.5% walk rate. Given his ability to limit hard contact, he is best to leave on the waiver wire when he faces the Braves this afternoon.

Austin Gomber Looks Good in Rehab Start

Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (shoulder) looked good in his minor-league rehab start on Tuesday for Triple-A Albuquerque, allowing an unearned run on just one hit while walking three and striking out five in four innings of work in a no-decision against Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 31-year-old southpaw allowed one run in four innings in his first rehab start on June 4 with Double-A Hartford, and if he comes out of Tuesday's start feeling good, it's possible he could rejoin the Rockies' rotation this Sunday against the Atlanta Braves. Gomber threw 69 pitches in his latest rehab start this week. Whenever he returns to Colorado, he'll be making his 2025 debut. There's not a whole lot to look at here from a fantasy perspective, as Gomber doesn't have much strikeout upside and is more of a fly-ball pitcher, which can be disastrous at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

Austin Gomber Throws Full Bullpen

Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (shoulder) threw a full, 30-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday that included fastballs, curveballs and changeups, according to MLB.com. Gomber expects to throw another bullpen session this weekend and then throw again on the team's next road trip before evaluating the next step in his rehab from soreness in his left shoulder that landed him on the 60-day injured list on March 27. The 31-year-old southpaw's bullpen on Tuesday was the first time that he had thrown off a mound since he was shut down from his minor-league rehab assignment in early April. He'll need a few more bullpens before potentially being cleared to face live hitters, so Gomber won't be able to make his 2025 debut until at least sometime in June. When healthy, he's a volatile fantasy streamer on the worst team in baseball.

Austin Gomber Throwing Long Toss

Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (shoulder) has increased his long-toss distance out to 90 feet, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding. Gomber initially suffered a left-shoulder injury back in spring training and then had a setback, which is why he hasn't been able to pitch at all for Colorado yet in 2025. It means that although he has resumed throwing, there's no guarantee that the 31-year-old veteran southpaw will return to the big leagues before the All-Star break in mid-July. When healthy, Gomber is really only attractive to fantasy managers in NL-only leagues for his above-average control. However, he has a below-average strikeout rate and pitches for one of the worst teams in baseball at a pitcher-friendly home park. He went 5-12 in 2024 with a 4.75 ERA (4.83 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP with a career-high 116 strikeouts, 38 walks and a league-high 30 home runs allowed.

Austin Gomber Has Not Thrown For A Month

Colorado Rockies left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber (shoulder) has yet to throw since his first rehab outing on March 28. The southpaw made one rehab outing with Triple-A Albuquerque but faced a setback after this start. In this outing, Gomber allowed two runs and three hits, and struck out five batters. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as the team has yet to provide a definitive timetable for his recovery. Gomber was shifted to the 60-day injured list earlier in April. Last season, Gomber logged a career-high 165 innings to the tune of a 4.75 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP. He tallied 116 punchouts but showed strong command of his pitches as he served up walks at an impressive 5.5 percent rate. However, he generated a 5.07 xERA, which placed him in the ninth percentile among qualified pitchers. While he remains sidelined, top prospect Chase Dollander should continue to see opportunities in the major leagues.

Austin Gomber Shut Down From Throwing, Won't Pitch For A Few Weeks

Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (shoulder) won't pitch for another two to three weeks, per Rockies manager Bud Black. Gomber was scratched from an injury rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday due to shoulder inflammation and has been shut down from throwing. The 31-year-old is on the 10-day injured list and likely won't return to Colorado's rotation until at least May. He owned a 4.75 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 116:38 K:BB across 165 innings in 2024. With Gomber on the injured list, the Rockies promoted top pitching prospect Chase Dollander on Friday, and he is set to make his MLB debut on Sunday against the Athletics. Dollander has a ton of upside and is worth taking a chance on in fantasy leagues with 12 teams or more after posting a 2.59 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 169:47 K:BB with High-A Spokane and Double-A Hartford in 2024.

Austin Gomber Scratched From Rehab Start With Shoulder Inflammation

Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (shoulder) was scratched from his scheduled minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday night due to left-shoulder inflammation, according to general manager Bill Schmidt. It's bad news for a pitcher that began the 2025 season on the 15-day injured list with left-shoulder soreness that cropped up during spring training. Even if the 31-year-old southpaw isn't dealing with any structural damage in his left shoulder, this setback essentially assures that he won't make his season debut with the Rockies until some point in May. In his first rehab start with Albuquerque last Friday, Gomber went four innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits (one homer) while walking two and striking out five. Gomber should remain on the waiver wire in most mixed fantasy leagues.

Austin Gomber To Open Season On Injured List

The Denver Post's Patrick Saunders reports that Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (shoulder) will open the 2025 regular season on the injured list as he recovers from left-shoulder soreness that he dealt with in spring training. The good news, though, is that Gomber is expected to rejoin the starting rotation early in the season. The 31-year-old veteran southpaw's only Grapefruit League appearance came way back on Feb. 25. Until he returns, the Rockies will roll with a four-man rotation consisting of Kyle Freeland, Ryan Feltner, German Marquez and Antonio Senzatela. When healthy, Gomber is merely a deep-league option, primarily when he's on the road. There's just not much fantasy upside for a pitcher with limited strikeout potential that has trouble keeping the ball out of the air.

Austin Gomber Scratched On Sunday

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Austin Gomber (shoulder) was scratched from his start on Sunday due to left shoulder soreness. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status in case this injury begins to linger. For the time being, it does not appear the southpaw is in danger of missing Opening Day. Over the past two seasons, Gomber has been deployed exclusively out of the bullpen. Last summer, the 31-year-old posted a 4.75 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP across 165 innings of work. He tallied 116 punchouts and showed strong command with a 5.5 percent walk rate. However, he struggled to limit hard contact as he generated a high 41.2 percent hard-hit rate and a 9.6 percent barrel rate. He also held a 5.07 xERA and a .278 xBA, which were well below the average marks. When healthy, Gomber will have a spot in the starting rotation.
