Coby Bryant Will Miss 4-6 Months After Knee Surgery

Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant (knee) underwent surgery and is expected to miss four to six months, head coach Ben Johnson told Courtney Cronin of ESPN. The team initially expected him to miss up to eight weeks, so a revised four-to-six-month timeline is extremely unfortunate for the Bears and their prized defensive back. Bryant left the Seahawks in free agency this past offseason, signing a three-year deal with Chicago worth $40 million. He tallied seven interceptions over the last two seasons and was supposed to fill a major starting role following the departure of safeties Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker. Instead, Bryant is now at risk of missing the entire regular season, leaving more opportunities for Elijah Hicks (calf), who is currently on the PUP list.

Coby Bryant Expected to Miss 8-10 Weeks With Knee Injury

Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant (knee) is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks after suffering a hyperextended knee, bone bruise, and small fracture during Monday's practice, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Surgery is not expected to be necessary. Bryant joined Chicago in March after starting 15 games for Seattle last season and recording 62 tackles, four interceptions, seven passes defended, and one forced fumble. He was brought in to play a significant role in a revamped safety group that also includes first-round rookie Dillon Thieneman. Cam Lewis stepped in with the first-team defense after Bryant left practice and should receive more opportunities while he is sidelined. The recovery timetable puts Bryant's availability for the beginning of the regular season in serious doubt. Avoiding surgery is encouraging, but Chicago will likely be without one of its top offseason additions for the remainder of training camp.

Coby Bryant Could Start Right Away

Seattle Seahawks rookie cornerback Coby Bryant could start right away opposite Sidney Jones this year, given the strong impression he's made so far in offseason workouts. The fourth-rounder will be competing with the likes of Tre Brown, Artie Burns and fellow rookie Tariq Wooley in training camp next month. Bryant played his college ball at Cincinnati and was a first-team All-American in his final season while recording 46 tackles, a team-high 14 passes defensed and three interceptions. The 23-year-old has impressed so far, but the fact that he's a candidate to start right away might be more of an indictment of how weak Seattle's secondary is heading into the 2022 season.
