Chargers Agree To Three-Year Deal With Elijah Molden
The Los Angeles Chargers agreed to a three-year contract extension with safety Elijah Molden (leg) on Thursday, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. In his first year with the Chargers in 2024, Molden played in 15 games (12 starts) before suffering a fractured fibula on Dec. 28 in the win over the New England Patriots. In his 15 starts, the 26-year-old defensive back had a career-high 75 tackles (43 solo), a career-high three interceptions, seven pass breakups and two fumble recoveries for the Bolts. The former third-round selection (100th overall) by the Tennessee Titans in 2021 out of the University of Washington will now continue his career in L.A. and be a staple of their secondary under head coach Jim Harbaugh. In his three years in Tennessee, Molden had 140 tackles (94 solo), two picks returned for TDs, eight pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries (one returned for a TD).
Los Angeles Chargers defensive back Elijah Molden (knee) is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering an injury during Saturday's game against the New England Patriots. It's a shame to see his season come to and end this way, but Molden suffered a broken fibula over the weekend. He'll finish the season with 75 tackles, seven passes defended, and three interceptions in 15 games (12 starts) with the Chargers. The loss of Molden means that recently signed safety Eddie Jackson could be asked to take on a larger role during the regular season finale.
The Los Angeles Chargers acquired defensive back Elijah Molden from the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2026, according to sources. Molden was a starter for most of last season in Tennessee and will now get a fresh start in 2024 on the west coast while giving the Chargers more secondary help. The 25-year-old former third-round selection (100th overall) in 2021 out of Washington had a career-best 73 tackles (47 solo), an interception returned for a touchdown, four pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 15 contests (eight starts) in 2023 in his third year in the league. Molden is likely to move around a bit in his new home alongside fellow safeties Derwin James and Alohi Gilman.
The Tennessee Titans selected Washington cornerback Elijah Molden with the No. 100 overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft on Friday night. Molden was a slot cornerback and also played some safety in college. He's not very big at 5-foot-10, 191 pounds, and he makes a lot of plays at the intermediate level of the field as a safety/slot cornerback hybrid. Molden won't wow you with his athleticism, but the Titans needed this type of defender in the middle of the field as they look to take the next step closer toward a Super Bowl appearance. He's willing to tackle, but he can also get dominated at times due to his lack of size. Molden could also be asked to follow running backs and smaller tight ends.
