The Los Angeles Chargers re-signed free-agent safety Tony Jefferson to an undisclosed one-year deal on Monday, sources told FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz. Jefferson did not play at all in 2023 but came out of retirement to join the Chargers last year and had 27 tackles (17 solo) in eight regular-season games (four starts). The 33-year-old veteran could very well retire after the 2025 season, and he certainly won't be a lock to make the 53-man active roster out of training camp this summer. The 10-year veteran defensive back has played for five different teams in his NFL career and has a total of 519 tackles (387 solo), 9.5 sacks, 35 tackles for loss, 20 QB hits, four interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 24 pass breakups, eight forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 121 regular-season games (71 starts). Jefferson won't be anywhere near the IDP fantasy radar.
The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Friday that they signed free-agent defensive back Tony Jefferson to an undisclosed deal. Jefferson is coming out of retirement after spending the last year working as a scout for the Baltimore Ravens. In his last season of NFL action in 2022 with the New York Giants, he played in only nine games (one start) and had 23 tackles (16 solo) and one pass breakup. The 32-year-old former undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma played four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals to begin his career before joining the Ravens for three full seasons from 2017-19. He played for the Ravens and San Francisco 49ers in 2021. Jefferson will merely be competing for a roster spot in LA in training camp and the preseason.
Tony Jefferson Attempting NFL Comeback With Chargers
Veteran free-agent safety Tony Jefferson will try out for the Los Angeles Chargers roster during the team's upcoming minicamp, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. After nine NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Giants, Jefferson announced his retirement in May of 2023. He announced plans to attempt a comeback in May of 2024, and he'll look to crack L.A.'s roster this offseason. Although Jefferson has never made a Pro Bowl or been named to an All-Pro team, he's been a solid and productive player, racking up 491 tackles, 9.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, four interceptions, and 24 pass deflections in 113 career games. If he makes the offseason roster, he'll still have an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. If he does that, he'll likely be utilized as a depth safety and veteran leader for a rebuilding organization.
Former Baltimore Ravens star safety Tony Jefferson is coming out of retirement and plans to play in 2024, according to a source. Jefferson has stayed in shape, has been training on his own, and wants to play again. He intends to start talking to teams in the near future after spending last year with the Baltimore Ravens as a scouting intern. In his last year in the NFL in 2022 with the New York Giants, Jefferson played in only nine games (one start) and had 23 tackles (16 solo). The 32-year-old former undrafted free agent entered the league in 2013 with the Arizona Cardinals and spent four years in the desert before joining the Ravens from 2017-21. Jefferson hasn't played in more than nine games in a single season since 2018 but could provide some nice veteran depth for a team in need of secondary help.
Free safety Tony Jefferson has decided to retire from playing in the NFL on Thursday. The 31-year-old registered 31 tackles in nine games with the New York Giants last season. He missed a majority of the season due to a foot injury. He spent most of his career as a member of the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens. Jefferson wasn't an All-Pro player, but he was a reliable defender and was a trustworthy player in coverage. It looks like it didn't take Jefferson long to find another job. He's set to join the Ravens staff as a scout, so best of luck to him going forward.
The New York Giants signed veteran free-agent defensive back Tony Jefferson to their practice squad, along with offensive lineman Wyatt Davis, defensive end Henry Mondeaux and linebacker Charles Wiley. Jefferson didn't survive roster cuts last Tuesday with the Baltimore Ravens, making him a free agent. The 30-year-old served as secondary depth for the Ravens and San Francisco 49ers last year and only played in six games, finishing with 18 tackles (nine solo) and one sack. Jefferson has eight years of NFL experience (four with the Arizona Cardinals) and should provide the Giants with some valuable depth in 2022.
The Baltimore Ravens plan to release safety Tony Jefferson, according to a source. The Ravens drafted Kyle Hamilton in the first round this offseason and also signed former New Orleans Saints standout Marcus Williams, leaving less opportunity for Jefferson, who had a strong preseason with nine tackles in one half in the finale last Saturday against the Washington Commanders. The 30-year-old veteran safety played in only six combined games with the Ravens and San Francisco 49ers last year, recording 18 tackles (nine solo), one sack and one pass defensed. Jefferson will be looking to latch on with another team as veteran defensive back depth before Week 1 arrives.

Jefferson led the team with 10 tackles in Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals and had 18 tackles in four games to close out the season. The veteran defensive back was a defensive leader for the Ravens from 2017-19 before he tore his ACL in Week 5 in 2019. He was released that offseason and missed all of 2020. Jefferson appeared in two games with the San Francisco 49ers last year before he was released.
Baltimore Ravens safety Tony Jefferson (ankle) isn't practicing at organized team activities this week after having ankle surgery in the offseason, according to head coach John Harbaugh. The 27-year-old might not be ready for the start of training camp this summer. He had 74 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception in 14 games last year for Baltimore. When healthy, he remains a starter for this secondary.
The Baltimore Ravens are expected to sign free-agent safety Tony Jefferson barring a last-minute negotiating snag. Jefferson was seen as one of the best safeties available on the market. The San Diego native posted a career-high 96 combined tackles in 2016 while also recording two sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and five passes defensed. He'll certainly strengthen Baltimore's secondary in 2017.
