Joe Alt to Have Season-Ending Ankle Surgery

The Athletic's Daniel Popper reports that the Los Angeles Chargers announced on Monday that left tackle Joe Alt (ankle) will have season-ending right-ankle surgery after suffering another high-ankle sprain on Sunday in the Week 9 win over the Tennessee Titans. Alt had to be carted off the field in Tennessee in the second quarter and will not play again this year. The 22-year-old initially injured the ankle in the Week 4 loss to the New York Giants, but the former fifth overall pick was able to return to action in the Week 8 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football. It's a big blow to L.A.'s offensive line and for the protection of quarterback Justin Herbert the rest of the way. Herbert was running for his life when Alt missed Weeks 5-7, so this could be really bad news for the Bolts' offense. Jamaree Salyer should take over at left tackle going forward.

Joe Alt Likely Suffers Another High-Ankle Sprain, May Require Surgery

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Joe Alt (ankle) is believed to have suffered another high-ankle sprain during Sunday's Week 9 win over the Tennessee Titans, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. Unlike his ankle injury earlier this season, Alt's latest high-ankle sprain could require a procedure to repair. Schefter's report indicates that the former first-round pick will likely miss time, regardless of whether surgery is confirmed as necessary. The 22-year-old will undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the diagnosis, determine the severity, and pinpoint a timeline for return. If Alt does miss time, Jamaree Salyer would likely step up as the starting left tackle in his absence.

Joe Alt Carted Off in Week 9 with Ankle Injury, Officially Questionable to Return

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Joe Alt (ankle) is officially questionable to return to his team's Week 9 matchup against the Tennessee Titans due to an ankle injury. The injury appeared to be serious, as Alt was carted off the field. The 22-year-old already missed three games earlier this season due to a high-ankle sprain. Alt is considered one of the best tackles in the NFL, so his absence could be a major issue for Los Angeles. If Alt is unable to return, Foster Sarell could be forced into action at left tackle for the Chargers for the remainder of Week 9.

Joe Alt Expected to Miss Several Weeks With High-Ankle Sprain

An MRI exam on Monday confirmed that Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Joe Alt (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the New York Giants, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Alt will seek multiple opinions on his injury, but he's expected to be out for several weeks. The 22-year-old was carted off on Sunday, but initial X-rays came back negative. Alt had moved from right tackle to left tackle after Rashawn Slater's season-ending knee injury. The loss of Alt, even though it's only for several weeks, is a big deal, as the Chargers will be down to third-stringer Austin Deculus protecting quarterback Justin Herbert's blind side. Fantasy managers should still consider Herbert a must-start QB1 in a plus Week 5 matchup against the Washington Commanders, but his protection on the left side will be worth watching.

Joe Alt Done for Week 4, Feared to Have High-Ankle Sprain

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Joe Alt (ankle) has been downgraded to out for the remainder of Sunday's Week 4 contest against the New York Giants. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the team believes that Alt suffered a high-ankle sprain, but additional testing will be conducted to confirm his diagnosis. The former first-round pick has been a staple of the Chargers' offensive line. He had played every snap of the 2025 season prior to Sunday's injury, and he also played 100 percent of the snaps in 16 different games as a rookie last year. Austin Deculus will be tasked with protecting Justin Herbert's blindside for the duration of Alt's absence.

Chargers Tackle Joe Alt Carted Off Field

The Los Angeles Chargers saw one of their most important players carted off the field Sunday when left tackle Joe Alt (ankle) had to depart the game against the New York Giants. Officially, the Chargers listed Alt as questionable to return, but the presence of the cart is very rarely a good sign for injuries. If Alt faces an extended absence, the Chargers will need to rely on their depth to product quarterback Justin Herbert's blind side.

Joe Alt Expected To Miss Time With MCL Sprain

Los Angeles Chargers stellar rookie offensive tackle Joe Alt (knee) suffered an MCL sprain in the Week 3 loss to the Pittsburgh Steeler on Sunday and is expected to miss time, according to sources. The good news is Alt isn't expected to need surgery on his knee. In addition to Alt being injured, left tackle Rashawn Slater (pectoral) strained his pectoral muscle against Pittsburgh, and quarterback Justin Herbert (ankle) aggravated his high-ankle sprain. The Chargers have their bye in Week 5, so there's a good chance Alt won't be out there for a big divisional clash against the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. If Slater also sits out this Sunday, the Chiefs defense could have their way with LA's offensive line. We'll have a better idea of whether the 21-year-old Alt is able to play based on his practice status later this week.

Joe Alt Likely To Start At Right Tackle

Los Angeles Chargers new head coach Jim Harbaugh named first-round rookie offensive lineman Joe Alt among the five offensive linemen that separated themselves during minicamp this offseason, likely solidifying Alt as the team's starting right tackle come Week 1 of the 2024 regular season. It's more of a formality for Alt, who was almost guaranteed to be a starter based on his draft pedigree alone, but having already been named a starter before the team was even in full pads indicates that Alt has made a positive impact in his first few weeks with the Chargers. "He's got all the right stuff," offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. "He respects the veterans, guys that have done it before him; He's got a great demeanor about him, great work ethic, and he's the kind of guy you want in the foxhole with you."

Chargers Sign Joe Alt To Rookie Deal

The Los Angeles Chargers officially signed rookie first-round offensive tackle Joe Alt to a four-year, $33.2 million deal on Monday after he was selected fifth overall in April's NFL draft. Alt was predictably the first offensive tackle off the board in 2024. Although he should eventually be a starting left tackle in the NFL, he'll initially start at right tackle in Los Angeles under new head coach Jim Harbaugh in LA with Rashawn Slater at left tackle. The Bolts are hoping Alt will be part of a much-improved offensive line this year with an added emphasis on the ground game to take pressure off of young quarterback Justin Herbert. The 21-year-old Alt hails out of Notre Dame and stands at 6-foot-8 and 321 pounds. Alt showed in his college career that he can excel in both run-blocking and in pass protection.

Joe Alt Heads To Chargers With Fifth Overall Pick

The Los Angeles Chargers selected Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt with the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday night. Under new head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, the Chargers are unsurprisingly trying to build up their offensive line to help protect their ground game and quarterback Justin Herbert. Alt was the consensus best offensive-line prospect in this year's draft and should be a starter in LA from Day 1 in 2024 at right tackle across from Rashawn Slater on the left side. He stands at 6-foot-8 1/2 and 320 pounds and uses his size and strength to his advantage to climb to the second level. Despite his towering size, he's quick and nasty in the trenches. Not only will Alt help keep Herbert clean in the pocket, but he should be an asset in the run game, too.
