Rashawn Slater Returns to Practice on Monday

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Rashawn Slater (foot) said he had a blister on his right foot ahead of training camp that had to be "carved out," which is what kept him from practicing early on. However, Slater was in uniform and did individual drills on Monday. He is expecting to do more on Tuesday. The 26-year-old is back on the field after signing a four-year, $114 million contract extension on Sunday that made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the league. The former first-rounder and two-time Pro Bowler should be 100 percent healthy by the start of the regular season and will be protecting quarterback Justin Herbert's blind side yet again. Slater missed two games early in 2024 due to a pectoral injury but was otherwise excellent. His presence on the left side of the O-line is definitely a big bonus for Herbert.

Rashawn Slater Gets Massive New Extension

The Los Angeles Chargers and standout left tackle Rashawn Slater are finalizing a four-year, $114M extension. The deal will make Slater the highest-paid tackle in the league and keep him with the team through his age-30 season. In his first four years in the league, Slater has been dominant as both a run blocker and in pass protection, and his 90.9 PFF grade in 2024 ranked second at the position. After using a top-five pick on right tackle Joe Alt in the 2024 draft, the bookends of the Chargers' offensive line compare favorably to those of any team in the league and will for the foreseeable future. All Chargers offensive pieces can be drafted with confidence, and 2025 first-round pick Omarion Hampton continues to look like one of the safest running back investments in dynasty leagues.

Rashawn Slater Not Practicing on Monday

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater is not practicing on Monday for the Chargers but is doing work on the side, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic. Popper writes that 2024 right tackle Joe Alt took Slater's place on the left side with the first-team offense, while Trey Pipkins filled in for Alt at right tackle. The 26-year-old Slater is entering the final year of his rookie contract with the Chargers and is in active contract extension negotiations with the team. The expectation had been that Slater would practice while the talks were ongoing, but it appears as though he may now be staging a "hold-in." It's noteworthy that Los Angeles is utilizing Alt on the left side in practice, as this could signal that the team does not expect a quick resolution with Slater. Any absence from the two-time Pro-Bowler would impact the outlook for all of the Chargers' skill-position players.

Rashawn Slater Likely Practicing During Extension Talks

According to Daniel Popper, left tackle Rashawn Slater is expected to practice while he discusses an extension with the Los Angeles Chargers. The team's general manager Joe Hortiz said he expects Slater to practice during ongoing contract talks. That being said, it seems the two sides should be close on a deal, considering Slater is willing to practice. Slater is in the final year of his deal and has shown good faith by showing up for minicamp and team activities. The expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowl left tackle will get a similar deal to Tristan Wirfs. Right now, Wirfs is currently the highest-paid left tackle, but Slater should be able to land a deal in a similar ballpark.

Rashawn Slater has "Full Confidence" a Deal Will Get Done

The Los Angeles Chargers and left tackle Rashawn Slater remain in contract-extension negotiations, but Slater said during mandatory minicamp in June that he had "full confidence" that a deal would get done. Slater is currently scheduled to play on his $19.04 million fifth-year option in 2025. The Athletic's Daniel Popper writes that the 26-year-old is one of the best left tackles in the league, which should allow him to command a top-of-the-market extension. Slater should be in the ballpark of Buccaneers tackle Tristan Wirfs, who is the highest-paid tackle in the NFL at $28.15 million in average annual value. He made the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career in 2024 as one of the league's best left tackles despite missing two games early on with a pectoral injury. Slater's presence on the left side is a huge boost for quarterback Justin Herbert.

Rashawn Slater Takes Part in Minicamp

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater skipped the two organized team activity sessions open to the media on May 27 and June 3 as he remains in contract negotiations with the team, but he was at practice this week for mandatory minicamp. He's currently slated to play in 2025 on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal, which would pay him $19.04 million. The 26-year-old's presence this week at minicamp is a positive sign that the two sides continue to work toward a long-term extension. Slater made the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career in 2024 after the Bolts made him the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft out of Northwestern. He figures to once again be a staple on the left side of the offensive line in 2025 as quarterback Justin Herbert's blind-side protector.

Rashawn Slater A Candidate For Extension

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Rashawn Slater became eligible for a contract extension at the end of last season. The Chargers picked up his fifth-year option in May, meaning he is under contract through the 2025 season. Slater has become an elite tackle, and the price for that position is only going up. Lions right tackle Penei Sewell, drafted six spots ahead of Slater in the first round in 2021, signed for $28 million in average annual value earlier this offseason. It will be interested to see if the Bolts wait to see Slater play in the new offense under head coach Jim Harbaugh before they commit to him long-term. The 25-year-old former 13th overall pick in 2021 out of Northwestern will be even more important to LA's offense in 2024 as they look to become more of a physical, run-first unit under Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Chargers Exercise Fifth-Year Option On Rashawn Slater

The Los Angeles Chargers exercised the 2025 fifth-year option on left tackle Rashawn Slater on Saturday, according to a source. Slater and Joe Alt, the No. 5 overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday night, will now bookend the team's offensive line for quarterback Justin Herbert going forward. This one comes as no surprise as new head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman look to shore up the team's offensive line with a new emphasis on the ground game in 2024 and beyond. Slater graded out as Pro Football Focus' fourth-best pass-blocking offensive lineman on Herbert's blind side. The addition of Alt to the right side should only strengthen Herbert's protection while also being good news for LA's ground game.

Rashawn Slater Is 100 Percent Healthy

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater (biceps) tore his bicep muscle in Week 3 last year and didn't play again the rest of the season. However, he said his bicep has been "100 percent" healthy for at least the last couple of months. He has been training with personal offensive-line trainer Duke Manyweather alongside teammates Trey Pipkins III and Foster Sarell. With a starting O-line of Slater, Zion Johnson, Corey Linsley, Jamaree Salyer and Pipkins, the Chargers will enter the 2023 season with one of the most solid offensive lines they've had in recent memory. "I just feel like the potential is insane with us," Slater said of the young group. "It's a really cool thing to be a part of." If they can stay healthy all year, they'll be a huge boost for quarterback Justin Herbert and running back Austin Ekeler.

Rashawn Slater Designated To Return From Injured Reserve

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Rashawn Slater (biceps) has been designated to return from the injured reserve. Slater has been out since he tore his biceps tendon towards the end of September. He won't suit up for the playoff matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, Slater has a chance at returning during the postseason, assuming the Chargers advance. He would certainly give his offensive line a boost if he's able to get back on the field this season.
