Shaq Thompson Still Dealing With Nagging Injury

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said that linebacker Shaq Thompson (groin) is still dealing with a nagging groin injury. Defensive tackle Derrick Brown (ankle) went down in one-on-ones in practice on Friday with a nagging ankle injury. However, Rhule said that Brown's injury isn't expected to be serious. Thompson could return to practice soon, but it's something to keep an eye on as one of the team's defensive leaders. The Panthers Defense will need the 26-year-old to step up with Luke Kuechly retired in the tough NFC South. With 109 combined tackles (75 solo), 11 tackles for loss, four QB hits and three sacks in 2019, Thompson has become a low-end starter at linebacker in IDP leagues.

Shaq Thompson Says He's 100 Percent

Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson (groin) said he's 100 percent with his groin after sitting out of last Thursday's practice. Thompson returned to practice on Friday and took part in drills. In a roster move for Carolina on Monday, the team waived running back Jordan Scarlett. Thompson had a career year in 2019, registering a career-high 109 combined tackles (75 solo), 11 tackles for loss, four quarterback hits and three sacks in 14 games in his fifth season with the team. The 26-year-old has an even more important role as the leader of the defense in the middle of the field with Luke Kuechly retired. It sounds like he'll be fine from a physical standpoint to begin the year. Treat Thompson as an every-week IDP starter.

Shaq Thompson Aiming To Step Up With Luke Kuechly Retired

Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson, a former first-round pick, is hoping to fill the void left in the middle of the defense when Luke Kuechly retired after last season. "But I gotta step up as the last linebacker [of that] trio that we had with Thomas Davis and Luke. So I gotta step up and fill that role and be that leader," Thompson said on NFL Network's Total Access. He had a great season in 2019, compiling a career-high 109 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss, three sacks and three passes defensed. With Thomas Davis gone last year, Thompson saw 903 defensive snaps after never seeing more than 609 in any of his previous seasons. The 26-year-old is definitely in play as a low-end starting linebacker in IDP leagues.
