Tyler Bass has Season-Ending Surgery

Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass (groin, hip) underwent surgery on his groin/hip and will not kick again this season, according to head coach Sean McDermott. Bass will end up missing the entire 2025 season and will close out the year on Injured Reserve. Veteran Matt Prater has been filling in for Bass all year in Buffalo and has made 17 of his 19 field-goal attempts (89.5%) and 34 of his 37 extra-point tries in 12 games played. In fantasy football, Prater has been the No. 14 kicker in terms of overall points, and he'll definitely be in play for the upcoming Week 14 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals and their generous defense. Bass signed a four-year contract extension with Buffalo in 2023, so he should be back with the team next year if he's recovered from his injuries.

Tyler Bass "Heading in the Right Direction"

While Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott remained non-committal on whether kicker Tyler Bass (groin, hip) would be able to play this season, he did say that he is "heading in the right direction," according to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic. Bass remains on Injured Reserve, and the Bills didn't feel comfortable opening his 21-day practice window this week, which means he will not be ready to return for Monday night's contest in Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons. The Bills probably aren't in any rush to bring the 28-year-old Bass back, with veteran Matt Prater being a reliable fill-in through the first five weeks of 2025. Prater has gone 10-for-15 on his field-goal chances while making all 15 of his extra-point opportunities for the 4-1 Bills. When/if Bass is fully healthy and ready to resume kicking, he should take back over as Buffalo's starting placekicker.

Tyler Bass Moving in the Right Direction

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said that kicker Tyler Bass (groin, hip) is "moving in the right direction," but the team is unsure when he will return from Injured Reserve, according to Maddy Glab of BuffaloBills.com. Bass will have to miss at least one more game while on IR, but he'll be eligible to make his 2025 debut in Week 5 against the division-rival New England Patriots. Given the fact that there's still no timetable on the 28-year-old's return, it seems unlikely he'll play next week. The Bills have been using veteran Matt Prater with Bass sidelined. Prater was perfect in the first two weeks before missing one of his two field-goal attempts last Thursday night in the win over the Miami Dolphins. The 41-year-old will be a strong starting kicking option in fantasy lineups again in Week 4 in a matchup against the 0-3 New Orleans Saints.

Tyler Bass Placed on Injured Reserve

Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass (groin) was placed on the injured reserve on Friday. Bass has been dealing with a lingering groin issue throughout training camp. He was only able to practice in a limited capacity once throughout the whole week leading up to Week 1. The Bills have decided to place Bass on the IR which means he'll miss the first four weeks of the regular season. That being said, Matt Prater will take over as the active roster for the Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. The Bills offense is strong enough to make Prater an attractive streaming option while Bass is out.

Tyler Bass Iffy to Kick on Sunday Night

Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass (hip, groin) was fairly reliable over his first five seasons, but his sixth year in the NFL is off to an injury-riddled start. After Bass missed most of training camp and all but one preseason game with pelvic soreness, his status for Week 1 is in question because of hip and groin issues. Bass did not practice on Thursday and will not practice on Friday, which could set the stage for just-signed veteran Matt Prater to kick against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. The big-legged Prater, 41, has had a quality career. However, Prater will be hard to count on for the Bills and fantasy managers after he missed most of last season with a torn meniscus as a member of the Arizona Cardinals. Bass is RotoBaller's 10th-ranked kicker going into the season, but even if he does play Sunday, he's a high-risk option because of his injury troubles.

Tyler Bass Missing Another Practice

Per the team, Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass (hip, groin) will not practice on Friday. Bass will miss his second consecutive practice after logging a limited session to start the week. The 28-year-old has been dealing with a lingering hip injury this offseason that he has been unable to shake. While Bass hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's meeting with the Baltimore Ravens, it'd undoubtedly be a surprise to see him suit up at this point -- particularly with Buffalo's signing of veteran kicker Matt Prater to the practice squad on Thursday. Fantasy managers can't yet rule him out, but with a Sunday night kickoff on tap, a contingency plan at the position is a sound strategy. Bass is ranked as a top ten option at his position per RotoBaller's Week 1 rankings.

Tyler Bass Downgraded to DNP on Thursday

Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass (hip) did not practice on Thursday after being listed as a limited practice participant on the first injury report of the year on Wednesday. Bass has been managing a hip injury since late July and missed time in training camp, although he did manage to kick in the preseason finale two weeks ago. But his downgrade on the Week 1 injury report, combined with the news of Buffalo signing veteran Matt Prater to the practice squad on Thursday means the veteran kicker's availability for Week 1 on Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens could be in jeopardy. Fantasy managers that drafted Bass as their starting kicker might have to find a replacement sooner than they were expecting if he ends up questionable or out on Friday's final injury report.

Bills Hope Tyler Bass Can Kick Next Week

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said that kicker Tyler Bass (pelvis) is "moving in the right direction," and the team is trying to be smart with him so he doesn't suffer a setback. The goal is for Bass to kick in the third preseason game next week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Maddy Glab of BuffaloBills.com reports that Bass will be limited in Friday's training camp practice. The Bills will hold the 28-year-old out of the second preseason game on Sunday against the Chicago Bears as a precaution. Barring a setback, it sounds like he'll be good to go for the Week 1 regular-season opener, where he'll be in play as a low-end starting fantasy kicker in 12-team leagues. Bass has made exactly 24 of his 29 field-goal attempts in each of the last two years in Buffalo. He's been steady but just hasn't had enough chances to make him a high-end fantasy option at his position.

Tyler Bass Sitting in Preseason Opener

Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass (pelvis) will not play in the team's preseason opener on Saturday against the New York Giants due to pelvic soreness, according to The Buffalo News' Jay Skurski. Bass has been dealing with a pelvic injury during training camp and is not ready to kick in a game yet. As a result, the Bills signed Caden Davis on Friday so that he can handle kicking duties on Saturday. The 28-year-old Bass has plenty of time to get ready for the start of the 2025 regular season, and there's no reason to believe that he won't be ready by early September. For fantasy purposes, Bass will be a low-end starting option at the position in 12-team leagues. The former sixth-round pick (188th overall) in 2020 out of Georgia Southern has an 84.5% success rate on his field goals and 96.4% success rate on extra points in his five NFL seasons in Buffalo.

Tyler Bass Still Not Practicing

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said that kicker Tyler Bass (pelvis) missed another training camp practice on Thursday. Bass continues to deal with a pelvis injury and is probably unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the New York Giants. As a result, the Bills worked out two kickers at camp on Wednesday and will probably sign one as insurance for Bass. The 28-year-old is a borderline fantasy starter in 12-team leagues when healthy, and he shouldn't be in danger of losing his starting job as long as he'll be ready for the Week 1 regular-season opener in early September. The former sixth-round pick in 2020 out of Georgia Southern has been Buffalo's starting kicker in all five of his NFL seasons and has made 84.5% of his 155 field-goal tries while making 96.4% of his extra points. Bass still has a few weeks to get ready for the regular season.
