Beckett Sennecke Ruled Out For 6-8 Weeks

Anaheim Ducks winger Beckett Sennecke (foot) has been ruled out for 6-8 weeks after he suffered a foot fracture during offseason training. Sennecke was the third pick in this year's draft. The 18-year-old signed an entry-level deal with the Ducks in July. However, the injury means that he will have to wait for his debut in the big league. Sennecke has proven himself to be a very skillful playmaker with 76 assists through 124 career OHL appearances with the Oshawa Generals. He's added 47 goals to average close to a point per game with the team.

Marshall Rifai Signs Two-Year Extension With Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Marshall Rifai has inked a two-year extension. He will carry an annual average value of $775,000 on the deal, which will kick in from the 2025-26 campaign. Rifai made his first two NHL appearances last term, averaging 11:40 of ice time across a couple of regular-season contests in February. The 26-year-old notched 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 57 AHL games with the Toronto Marlies. Following a quiet regular season on the offensive front, Rifai exploded for three goals and four points in three AHL playoff games. Rifai provides depth at the back for the Maple Leafs and isn't expected to make the roster for the start of the season.

Oskar Sundqvist Resumes Skating

St. Louis Blues center Oskar Sundqvist (knee) has resumed skating ahead of the new campaign. The veteran centerman had his 2023-24 season cut short by an ACL injury on March 25. Sundqvist was initially ruled out for six months, so he appears to be on track in his recovery. While the 30-year-old offers little to fantasy managers, he has been an effective bottom-six center for the Blues. Sundqvist totaled 21 points (six goals, 15 assists) in 71 appearances last season and has gone for 144 points (56 goals, 88 assists) in 426 career games.

Thatcher Demko Resumes Skating

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko (knee) is back skating and working on the ice this week, according to CHEK's Rick Dhaliwal. Demko is working his way back from a knee injury and was expected to miss the preseason. However, his return to the ice might signal that he could be game-ready sooner than previously expected. The American netminder enjoyed a career year in 2023-24, posting a 35-14-2 record with five shutouts and allowing 2.45 goals with a .918 save percentage. Despite the positive news regarding Demko, Dhaliwal also reported on Tuesday that the Canucks continue to pursue unrestricted free agent Kevin Lankinen as an extra option between the pipes.

Despite the ailments, Marchand posted a respectable 67 points (29 goals, 38 assists) in 82 games and added three goals with seven assists in 11 playoff appearances. According to Ty Anderson of NBC Sports Boston, Marchand is on track to be ready for the start of the season.

Torey Krug To Miss Season Due To Ankle Surgery

St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug (ankle) has been ruled out for the 2024-25 NHL season. The team announced last month that Krug had been diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle and would try to rehabilitate the injury without surgery. However, in the end, Krug is forced to have surgery to get the issue fixed, and as a result, he will not be able to play in the upcoming campaign. The 33-year-old has endured a couple of rough seasons, amassing a minus-57 rating across the past two years. But he's had a solid career with the Blues and Boston Bruins, posting 483 points (89 points, 394 assists) in 778 outings. Newly acquired Philip Broberg could land an important role on the blue line with Krug on the shelf.

Leon Draisaitl Signs Eight-Year Extension With Oilers

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl has agreed to an eight-year contract extension with the franchise. The German superstar landed a deal worth $112 million and will carry a historically high cap hit of $14 million starting from 2025-26. $104 million of the deal will be paid out in bonuses. Draisaitl was signed to a huge deal after he went for 100-plus points for the fifth time in six seasons. He has amassed 850 points (347 goals, 503 assists) in 719 games across his 10-year career -- only his teammate Connor McDavid (982) and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov (855) have been more prolific in that span. There should be plenty more to come from Draisaitl, who won't even be 30 until next year.

Tyler Johnson Signs Professional Tryout Agreement With Bruins

Two-time Stanley Cup champion Tyler Johnson has joined the Boston Bruins on a professional tryout agreement. The veteran forward is looking to extend his NHL career into a 13th year. Following a long spell with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Johnson has spent the last three campaigns with the Chicago Blackhawks. He notched 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) in 67 games last season. The former All-Star became a free agent after completing a seven-year, $35 million contract he signed with the Lightning in 2017. Johnson has made 738 regular-season appearances in the National Hockey League, scoring 193 goals and 431 points. Last season showed that Johnson still has some juice left offensively, and with over 100 playoff games on his resume, he will also add a lot of experience to the Boston team if he earns himself a standard contract for 2024-25.

Arturs Silovs Expected To Be Fine For Training Camp

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Arturs Silovs (knee) is expected to be good to go for the start of training camp. Silovs pulled out from Latvia's Olympic qualifying tournament last week due to knee inflammation. However, Team Latvia general manager Rudolfs Kalvinitis believes Silovs will be fine for the Canucks camp, which opens on Sept. 19. The Canucks are already without Thatcher Demko (knee), who's set to miss the preseason, so the team can breathe a sigh of relief knowing Silovs isn't dealing with anything serious. Silovs has a 6-2-1 career regular-season record in the NHL and went 5-5 in last year's playoffs while filling in for Demko.

Josh Norris Fully Recovered From Shoulder Surgery

Ottawa Senators center Josh Norris (shoulder) is fully healthy for the start of training camp. Norris underwent left shoulder surgery in early March, missing the final couple of months last season. He made 50 appearances in 2023-24, scoring 16 goals and 30 points. Shoulder issues have plagued Norris for several years; this was already his third surgery to get it fixed. Considering his injury history, Norris' fantasy stock is likely at an all-time low. However, he could surprise many in the new season if he manages to get a full campaign under his belt. Norris has never made more than 66 appearances across a single season. He boasts 123 points (70 goals, 53 assists) in 183 career appearances.

Simon Nemec Sustains Upper-Body Injury Playing For Slovakia

New Jersey Devils defenseman Simon Nemec has suffered an upper-body injury playing for his native Slovakia in the 2026 Olympic qualifiers. According to Tomas Prokop of Dennik Sport, Nemec is flying back to New Jersey for further tests. Team Slovakia doctor Pavol Lauko has said that "nothing is broken or dislocated." It's an encouraging update, but Nemec might still need to take some time off to heal a couple of weeks before training camp opens. Nemec had his rookie campaign in the NHL last term, going for 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) in 60 games while leading the team with 105 blocks.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis has signed an eight-year extension. The two parties came to an agreement on a $63.2 million pact. Jarvis was a restricted free agent. The 22-year-old cashes in on a big season. After amassing 79 points (31 goals, 48 assists) in his first two NHL campaigns, Jarvis notched 33 goals and 67 points in 81 outings last season. He added a team-best five goals and four assists in 11 playoff games. The Winnipeg-born forward still has a lot of room to grow as a player, and barring any injuries, Jarvis could get close to being a point-per-game player in 2024-25.

Martin Fehervary Nursing Nagging Injury

Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary is nursing an undisclosed nagging injury. The 24-year-old was expected to suit up for Slovakia in Olympic qualifying games but withdrew from action. Tom Gulitti of NHL.com has mentioned that it's a minor injury, so it looks like the ailment won't threaten Fehervary's status for the upcoming campaign. Fehervary has missed significant time in each of the last two NHL seasons. He was limited to 66 games in 2023-24, posting 16 points (three goals, 13 assists). Fehervary's offensive numbers have been modest throughout his career, but he ranked inside the top three in both hits (188) and blocks (109) on the Capitals team last term.

The speedy winger made 73 appearances with the Hurricanes last season, contributing six goals and 13 assists. He signed a two-year, $4.8 million contract with Carolina last offseason. Fast has had a solid career as a bottom-six forward, posting 248 points (91 goals, 157 assists) in 703 career games. His absence will give some of the Hurricanes' youngsters a chance to make the team.

Laurent Brossoit Recovering From Knee Surgery

Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Laurent Brossoit will miss the start of training camp after undergoing surgery on his right knee. The 31-year-old veteran is expected to be game-ready in five to seven weeks. The Blackhawks kick off their 2024-25 campaign against Utah on Oct. 8. Following a second spell with the Winnipeg Jets, Brossoit joined the Blackhawks on a two-year deal in free agency this summer. He'll be sharing the net with Petr Mrazek. Brossoit had an impressive 15-5-2 record with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage last season. He benefited from playing behind a strong team, and the 2023 Stanley Cup winner is set to face a much tougher time in Chicago.

Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were killed Thursday when they were struck by a car while riding bicycles. After getting drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL draft by the Calgary Flames, Gaudreau skated in 763 regular-season games, scoring 243 goals and 743 points. He's the fifth-highest scoring player in Flames history with 609 points (210 goals, 399 assists). Thatcher Demko Expected To Miss Preseason

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko (knee) will reportedly not be ready for training camp or preseason, according to CHEK's Rick Dhaliwal and Thomas Drance of The Athletic. Demko is also considered questionable for the regular-season opener on Oct. 9 versus Calgary, but the team hopes to have him available by then. The Canucks No. 1 continues to rehab a knee injury, which limited him to only one playoff appearance last season. Arturs Silovs did a good job filling in for him. Fantasy managers should have him on their radar in case Demko remains on the shelf for the start of the season.

Aaron Ekblad Poised To Play Out Season With Panthers

Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad appears set to remain with the team despite his pending status as an unrestricted free agent. Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News expects Ekblad to spend the entire campaign with the reigning Stanley Cup champions. As the Panthers have lost Brandon Montour to Seattle in free agency this offseason, Ekblad should have a bigger role to play on the team. However, his health status should be a concern for fantasy managers. The 28-year-old featured in only 51 regular-season games last term and has missed significant time in each of the past four campaigns.

Matt Benning Expected To Be Ready For Training Camp

San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Benning (hip) looks good to go for the new season. Sharks general manager Mike Grier expects Benning to be ready for the start of training camp, noting that he's in a "good spot." Benning is working his way back from hip surgery he had in January. The 30-year-old managed to make only 14 appearances last season. He registered two assists, 13 shots, 29 blocks, and 19 hits. The eight-year veteran had his best campaign in 2022-23 with 24 points (one goal, 23 assists). Benning will look to get back on track this season, although there's a lot more competition on the blue line following the team's busy offseason.
