Joey Cantillo has 20 Whiffs on Sunday, Must-Roster Player Moving Forward?

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo wrapped up a solid first half of the season on Sunday, going up against one of the hottest lineups in the Majors, the Miami Marlins, and holding them to one run. He went five innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, two walks, and racked up nine punchouts with a very impressive 20 whiffs and 44 percent CSW (Called Strike plus Whiff rate). After Sunday's outing, Cantillo wrapped up his first half with an 8-4 record, 3.56 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 105:49 K:BB ratio through 20 starts (101 innings pitched). Cantillo has found tremendous success utilizing his secondary pitches, the changeup and curveball, both of which have 41.5 percent and 38.1 percent whiff rates, respectively. His fastball has left some room for improvement, but he pitches in a rotation that consistently gets the most out of its pitchers in Cleveland, and Cantillo will remain a solid option moving forward and should be rostered in all 12-plus-team formats.

Joey Cantillo Remains Strong Waiver-Wire Target Despite June Slide

Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo has put together a strong 2026 campaign, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 89 strikeouts across 91 innings in 18 starts. The 26-year-old looked like one of the American League's biggest breakout pitchers early in the season before encountering some turbulence in June. Cantillo recorded a 4.50 ERA during the month, with his 11.5 BB% contributing to the inconsistency. Even so, he has consistently shown the ability to make adjustments and rebound from difficult stretches. His strikeout upside and overall body of work continue to support his fantasy value. Managers searching for rotation help should view Cantillo as a high-upside waiver wire addition in all league formats.

Joey Cantillo Emerging as a Priority Waiver-Wire Target

Across 86 innings (17 starts) in 2026, Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo has recorded a 6-3 record with a 3.87 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 85 strikeouts. The 26-year-old's WHIP is elevated by his 10.8% walk rate, which limits his value to fantasy managers to some degree. Still, Cantillo has limited opposing batters to a 36.6% hard-hit rate and has been a reliable innings-eater for the Guardians so far this season. Cantillo has also demonstrated a higher upside in recent outings, recording a 28.7% strikeout rate and 7% walk rate across 28 innings (five starts) in June. Especially in more favorable matchups, Cantillo profiles as a quality starting pitcher streamer. His next scheduled start will come on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers in Cleveland.

Joey Cantillo Remains a Strong Streamer Option For the Guardians Moving Forward

Cleveland Guardians left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo has been rock solid in 2026, posting a 3.26 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and a 27.2 percent strikeout rate. Under the hood, he has been solid as well, with a 3.85 xERA and .226 xBA. The Guardians also know how to develop pitchers, and, pitching for an organization that typically squeezes the most out of its pitchers, Cantillo remains a good add in most 12- or more-team formats. Cantillo has made six starts on the season and has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any of those outings. While he does not work deep into games, having gone only six innings in one of those starts, he limits loud contact and big innings. Last season, in 95 1/3 innings over 13 games, he posted a 3.21 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Now, through six starts this year, we have a 19-start sample size for Cantillo, in which he has been in the mid-threes ERA with a WHIP between 1.25 and 1.32, which is valuable to own in fantasy baseball. Next up for Cantillo is a start at the Athletics over the weekend.

Joey Cantillo Becoming a Priority Add in Fantasy Leagues

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo (1-0) is off to a great start to the 2026 season, posting a 2.61 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and a 24:9 K:BB across 20 2/3 innings. He is becoming a key part of Cleveland's rotation and owns an elite 29.6 K% and a 11.4% swinging strike rate through four starts. Cantillo had been pitching well last season after joining the rotation in July, posting a 2.96 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 72:28 K:BB over 67 innings over his last 13 starts. The 26-year-old has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his four starts and will look to continue his impressive stretch in his next start Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Fantasy managers looking for a streamer on Sunday and a boost to their pitching staff should consider adding Cantillo. He is currently rostered in 52% of Yahoo Fantasy leagues and is becoming a priority add for fantasy managers in need of starting pitching.

Joey Cantillo Viewed as a Trustworthy Streaming Choice

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Joey Cantillo is looking to keep the good times rolling after a stellar outing on Wednesday. The southpaw went 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out nine batters in the win over the Kansas City Royals. Through three outings, Cantillo has an impressive 2.45 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and a 20/7 K/BB ratio in 14.2 innings of work. His next trip on the mound will come against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Given his latest success, Cantillo should be viewed as a trustworthy streaming option against the lackluster Cardinals lineup.

Joey Cantillo to Compete for Rotation Job This Spring

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo has plenty of experience pitching in relief, but MLB.com's Tim Stebbins writes that Cantillo will compete for a rotation job in spring training. In 13 starts (67 innings) for the Guardians in the second half of last season, Cantillo had a solid 2.96 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 72 strikeouts, and 28 walks. The 26-year-old southpaw will primarily be competing with pitching prospect Parker Messick for one of the final spots in the rotation in camp. If Messick impresses more, Cleveland can just slide Cantillo back into a relief role. He had a 3.81 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 21 outings out of the Guardians' bullpen in 2025. Although he may have had some luck as a starter to close out the year, Cantillo did have a 25.9% strikeout rate and 10.8% walk rate while holding hitters to a .214 average. As more of a swingman than a locked-in starter, Cantillo can be ignored in mixed fantasy leagues.

Joey Cantillo Dominates Royals on Tuesday

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo dominated the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, earning the victory by throwing eight scoreless innings and striking out five while allowing four hits and zero walks. In 80 1/3 big-league innings (31 games, 10 starts), Cantillo is 5-3 with a 3.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts. He's been excellent in two starts for Cleveland since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus on September 3, allowing just one run across 14 innings pitched. Walks (12.1% BB rate entering Tuesday) have been an issue for Cantillo this season, but he's consistently missed bats and could be an intriguing streaming option for fantasy managers down the stretch.

Joey Cantillo Expected to Start on Wednesday

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo is with the big-league club and is expected to make the start for Wednesday's game at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox, according to Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Left-hander Logan Allen will be either pushed back in the rotation or moved to the bullpen with the return of Cantillo. The 25-year-old southpaw won't be a recommended streamer for fantasy managers in his return to the Guards on Wednesday after sporting an ERA over 6.00 with 12 strikeouts and four walks in two starts for Triple-A Columbus since being sent down to the farm. In his 29 appearances (eight starts) in the big leagues this year, Cantillo has a decent 3.93 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP, 80 strikeouts and 36 walks in 66 1/3 frames. In a relief appearance against Boston on April 27, he allowed three runs (two earned) with a walk and three K's in just two innings.

Joey Cantillo to Start for Guardians on Thursday

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo will start their game against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic. Righty Luis L. Ortiz had been scheduled to take the mound, but Major League Baseball has placed him on paid leave for an unknown reason. The start against the Cubs' high-powered offense figures to be a short one for Cantillo, who has only totaled 28 1/3 innings in 21 appearances this season. The 25-year-old has registered a 3.81 ERA with 36:14 K:BB and a 1.38 WHIP.
