Guardians Place Steven Kwan on Bereavement List

The Cleveland Guardians placed outfielder Steven Kwan on the bereavement/family medical emergency list on Thursday, according to Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. Kwan will miss the entire three-game weekend series against the Boston Red Sox and could also miss the start of next week's series in the Bronx against the New York Yankees. Fantasy managers setting daily lineups must act accordingly. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder is having the worst year of his career in 2026 in his fifth season in the big leagues, as he enters play on Thursday hitting just .207/.329/.259 with a .588 OSP, one home run, 12 RBI, 25 runs scored, and two stolen bases in 54 games and 234 plate appearances. The former fifth-round selection in 2018 out of Oregon State has never been a big power guy at 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds, but his speed numbers have also been down, and he currently has a career-low 8.8% hard-hit rate, which sits in the first percentile in the big leagues. Kwan has a career-low .231 BABIP as well, which means he should see some positive regression to the mean, but his current expected average sits at .229.

Steven Kwan Back in Sunday's Lineup

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan (neck) is starting in center field and batting in his customary leadoff spot for the Guards on Sunday in the series finale against the hosting Toronto Blue Jays and left-hander Patrick Corbin, according to MLB.com. Kwan was held out of the first two games of this series in Canada on Friday and Saturday with neck stiffness, but he's feeling good enough to return for the third game of the series on Sunday. Fantasy managers will be hoping that Kwan can snap out of his recent slump, as he's gone just 2-for-18 in his last seven games. The 28-year-old former fifth-rounder in 2018 out of Oregon State is hitting just .227/.315/.289 with a .604 OPS, one home run, eight RBI, 10 runs scored, and two stolen bases in 112 plate appearances across 26 games in the early going in his fifth year in the big leagues. The two-time All-Star has faced Corbin eight times in his career and has had some success, batting .375 against him with an .819 OPS and an RBI.

Steven Kwan Scratched With Neck Stiffness

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan (neck) will miss Saturday's game with neck stiffness. The 28-year-old was originally set to lead off for the club in their afternoon game at Toronto, but he was pulled from the lineup just hours before opening pitch. It is unclear how the injury happened, and any developments are important to monitor, but for now, he should be considered day-to-day with a stiff neck. Angel Martinez took over the leadoff spot in Kwan's place and will also play in center field for Cleveland.

Steven Kwan to Get Reps in Center Field

Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said that outfielder Steven Kwan will get some reps in center field this spring, according to Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. The Guardians are searching for the best possible outfield alignment. Kwan has won the American League Gold Glove award in left field in each of his four seasons with the team. In addition to the 28-year-old, Chase DeLauter, Daniel Schneemann, and Angel Martinez also figure to play in center during spring training for Cleveland. Kwan had his second straight season of double-digit home runs, but he still only hit 11 bombs while slashing .272/.330/.374 with a career-low .705 OPS, career-high 56 RBI, 81 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases in 156 regular-season games. He has great discipline as the leadoff hitter for the Guards and will also provide plenty of runs scored, a strong average, and stolen bases, but you'll need to get your power elsewhere.

Blue Jays Have Had Previous Interest in Steven Kwan

Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports that the Toronto Blue Jays explored the idea of trading for current Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan at the 2025 trade deadline. Toronto is known to be searching for potential outfield upgrades, having reportedly made a sizable offer to outfielder Kyle Tucker before he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Guardians have two years of team control remaining over Kwan before he hits free agency, which is typically around the time Cleveland usually considers turning players into future assets. Across 693 plate appearances for the Guardians in 2025, Kwan posted a .272/.330/.374 slash line with 11 home runs, 56 RBI, 81 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases. He's won four consecutive Gold Glove awards in left field, so an acquiring team would likely plug him in as its everyday left fielder. If Toronto were to trade for Kwan, Blue Jays outfielders Nathan Lukes and Anthony Santander would likely lose playing time.

Dodgers Still Interested in Trading for Steven Kwan?

The Cleveland Guardians almost traded outfielder Steven Kwan to the Los Angeles Dodgers over the summer, and the Dodgers will "come calling again," according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. After the Dodgers' failed experiment with the left-handed-hitting Michael Conforto, they will have an opening in their outfield for 2026, and Kwan could fill that spot while giving the back-to-back World Series champions another on-base machine for either the top or bottom of their stacked batting order. The Guardians' price tag for Kwan will be high, but the Dodgers have plenty of prospect capital to get something done. The 28-year-old has been an All-Star each of the last two years in Cleveland and hit .272/.330/.374 with a career-low .705 OPS, 11 homers, 56 RBI, 81 runs, and 21 steals in 156 regular-season games. Kwan lacks power, but he's plenty useful for a high-floor average, runs, and speed, and his fantasy value would receive a boost if he were to move to L.A.

Steven Kwan and Shane Bieber Could Be Traded at the Deadline

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Guardians are more likely to be sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline after the loss of closer Emmanuel Clase to non-disciplinary leave. He mentions both outfielder Steven Kwan and starting pitcher Shane Bieber (elbow) as top trade chips the team could move. Kwan is getting lots of interest with the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Phillies, and Padres all in the mix. Kwan typically does a great job getting on base and is hitting .287 this year with nine homers, a .334 wOBA, and 11 stolen bases. He's under club control for two more seasons after this year, so the asking price is sure to be extremely high. Bieber is another interesting option for teams to consider since he's just returning from Tommy John surgery in April of 2024. He is making a rehab start in Double-A on Tuesday and is expected to be heavily scouted as teams evaluate if he can help them this year. He has a $16 million player option for 2026, which he could use to hit the open market this offseason, making him more of a short-term rental for the stretch run than a longer-term solution like Kwan.

Steven Kwan Goes Deep Twice in Losing Effort

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan had the first multi-home run game of his career on Thursday in the series finale against the visiting Baltimore Orioles, but the Guardians were unable to pull off the four-game sweep in a 4-3 loss. Kwan went 2-for-4 in the contest with two solo home runs (both off Orioles starter Charlie Morton) and a walk. The 27-year-old has owned Morton so far in 2025, as the two homers off the veteran right-hander made it three on the year against him. Kwan was held out of the first three games of the second half of the season last weekend due to an injured right wrist, but he has now played in the last four games and has gone 5-for-15 with two home runs, three RBI and four runs scored. He seems to be past his wrist injury and could draw some interest at the trade deadline. However, with the Guards still very firmly in the mix for a wild-card spot, he's more of a long shot to be dealt.

Teams Calling on Steven Kwan

The New York Post's Jon Heyman reports that many teams are calling about Cleveland Guardians All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan. The Guardians are listening on Kwan as well as some others, but it would have to be a compelling offer for them to seriously consider shipping him away. Cleveland enters play on Wednesday nine games back of the division-leading Detroit Tigers but only 2.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League. Heyman also mentions that the Guardians have a pretty soft schedule at the end of the season. Kwan was an All-Star for the second straight season this year and is currently slashing .285/.348/.393 with a .741 OPS, six home runs, 32 RBI, 44 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 94 games played. The left-handed hitter doesn't have much power, but he's one of the best contact guys in the league and sets the table nicely for Cleveland.

Steven Kwan Back in Lineup on Monday

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan (wrist) is back in left field and is batting leadoff for Monday's series opener against the visiting Baltimore Orioles and right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano. The Guardians held Kwan out of each of the first three games of the second half from Friday through Sunday due to an injury to his right wrist. The 27-year-old is feeling better now, though, after receiving a pain-killing injection over the weekend. Kwan is hitless in three career at-bats against Sugano, but fantasy managers will want to get him back into their starting lineups for the week now that he's back. He made the All-Star team this year for the second straight season and begins the second half with a nice .285/.345/.396 slash line with a .741 OPS, six home runs, 32 RBI, 43 runs scored and 11 steals in 92 games.
