C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Sign With Bears

The Chicago Bears and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson have agreed to terms on a deal after visiting on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Gardner-Johnson now reunites with his former defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen, who coached him for his first three years in the league with the New Orleans Saints. The 27-year-old played in three games this season with the Houston Texans before being released in late September. He started all three games for an elite Houston defense and should be able to provide immediate help to a Bears defense that is reeling with injuries at the moment.

Ravens Release C.J. Gardner-Johnson From Practice Squad

The Baltimore Ravens released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday after his agent, Kevin Conner, and Ravens officials came to "an amicable mutual decision," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "After the Ravens traded for a safety, we were looking for a clearer path to play," Conner added. After signing Gardner-Johnson to their practice squad last week, they acquired Alohi Gilman in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers to bolster depth at the safety position. The 27-year-old Gardner-Johnson wanted out and will now get another opportunity to latch on with a team in need of safety help. He will be searching for his third team of the season after the Houston Texans released him after just three games into the year. Gardner-Johnson recorded six interceptions with the Philadelphia Eagles last year on his way to earning a Super Bowl ring.

Texans Release C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday

The Houston Texans released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday amid "friction behind the scenes with him complaining about his role," league sources told Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Sports. Gardner-Johnson also wanted to blitz more and even said he wanted to be traded. With the 27-year-old no longer in Houston, the Texans will move forward with M.J. Stewart as the next man up at safety. Gardner-Johnson actually played at least 94 percent of the defensive snaps in the Texans' first three games of the season, but he was still unhappy with his role and wanted out. In his short time in Houston, he racked up 15 tackles (11 solo). The former fourth-round pick in 2019 by the New Orleans Saints should be able to latch on quickly with another team in need of reinforcements in their defensive backfield.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Track to Play in Season Opener

Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said that safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (knee) is on track to play in the Week 1 regular-season opener on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, according to the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander. Gardner-Johnson suffered a knee injury in early August in training camp, but thankfully he avoided anything serious and should be ready to go this weekend to kick off the 2025 campaign. The 27-year-old defensive back is in his first year in Houston and is expected to be a starter in the defensive backfield right away. Gardner-Johnson helped the Eagles win last year's Super Bowl and had 59 tackles (35 solo), a career-high-tying six interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 12 pass breakups and a forced fumble in 16 regular-season starts. He will be looking to slow down Matthew Stafford and Company if he's active on Sunday.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Active In Week 3

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson (foot) is officially active to face the New Orleans Saints on the road in a Week 3 showdown on Sunday. Gardner-Johnson was listed as questionable for Week 3 on Friday's final injury report after missing practice on both Thursday and Friday, but he was optimistic all along he could suit up. The 26-year-old apparently convinced the Eagles' coaching staff that he was fine during pre-game warmups on Sunday. With Gardner-Johnson in the fold, it will be a tougher test for a Saints offense that has been full speed ahead through the first two weeks of the 2024 season with blowout wins over the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys. Gardner-Johnson, a former fourth-round pick by the Saints, has 11 tackles (five solo) through the first two weeks in his return to the Eagles after spending time in Detroit in 2023.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Hopeful To Play

Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (foot) is currently listed as questionable ahead of the Week 3 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Gardner-Johnson was unable to practice on Thursday or Friday, which puts him in a bad spot ahead of Sunday's game. Despite that, the Eagles are hopeful that Gardner-Johnson will play, but they will have to wait until warmups. The loss of Gardner-Johnson would likely mean Avonte Maddox starts at safety. The absence of Gardner-Johnson would be a downgrade for this secondary and defensive unit as a whole.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Dealing With Shoulder Injury

Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (shoulder) is currently sidelined at training camp with a shoulder injury, but it's not considered a long-term injury. With Gardner-Johnson sidelined at Tuesday's training camp practice, Avonte Maddox is filling in for him with the first-team defense. When healthy, the 26-year-old Gardner-Johnson is a lock to start at safety for an Eagles secondary that was a liability for the defense in 2023. The former fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2019 out of Florida only played in three games last year for the Detroit Lions due to a torn pectoral muscle before signing a three-year deal with Philly in March. Gardner-Johnson's six interceptions with the Eagles in 2022 represent half of his career total. He's useful as a bye-week filler at defensive back in IDP leagues when he's healthy.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Heading Back To Philly

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms on a deal with safety/defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday. The 26-year-old is headed back to Philly on a three-year, $33 million deal. Gardner-Johnson spent the 2022 season in Philly where he flourished as a free safety. That season, Gardner-Johnson finished with 67 tackles, eight passes defended, and a league-leading eight interceptions in 12 games. After that, Gardner-Johnson headed to Detroit but only ended up playing in three games with the Lions last season. The move back to Philly appears to be a great decision for both sides.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Set To Play In Week 18

Detroit Lions defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson (pectoral) will make his return to the field ahead of the Week 18 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. A welcoming sight considering Gardner-Johnson has been out since tearing his pectoral muscle in Week 2. The Lions were hopeful for big things from Gardner-Johnson after signing him to a big deal this offseason. The good news is that he'll be back in time for the postseason. His return will give the Lions secondary a significant boost heading into the regular season finale.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Won't Return In Week 17

Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (pectoral) and linebacker James Houston (ankle) have been ruled out for the Week 17 game against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night. Cornerback Cameron Sutton (toe) is also questionable. Gardner-Johnson was limited in practice all week but still isn't quite ready to return and will miss his 14th straight game of the year after getting hurt early in 2023. At this point, the Lions are just hoping that the 26-year-old will be able to help them in the playoffs. Houston returned to practice on Thursday for the first time since fracturing his ankle in Week 2, so he's understandably not ready to return to game action just yet. It's probably a stretch to expect him to play in the Week 18 regular season finale against the Minnesota Vikings as well.
