Laremy Tunsil News
Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil said on Wednesday that he wants to be the highest-paid tackle in the league. "I don't know who's the highest right now, maybe Trent [Williams] at $23 [million], but I want to top that," Tunsil said. "Always want to reset the market. Perfect opportunity to reset the market. Everything is lining up as far as my contract to how I'm playing. Everything lining up perfectly." He was named the starting left tackle for the Pro Bowl and plans to renegotiate his deal in the offseason. Tunsil is entering the final year of his three-year, $66 million extension he signed in 2020. The 28-year-old will have a base salary of $18.5 million in 2023, but the Texans could release or trade him to free up space ($16 million dead-cap number). Despite being on a bad team, his production has ranked among the NFL's best.
The Houston Texans are expected to keep Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil around for next season, according to league sources. Tunsil was the subject of unprompted exploratory trade calls from other teams, but the Texans will move forward with him. The two-time Pro Bowler played in a career-low five games in 2021 due to a lingering thumb injury that required surgery in October. When healthy, the former first-round pick (13th overall) of the Miami Dolphins has been among the best left tackles in football. The Texans will restructure his deal to convert the bulk of his 2022 salary into a signing bonus that prorates over the final two years of his deal. A healthy Tunsil next year will be good news for quarterback Davis Mills or whomever is under center for the Texans.
Houston Texans head coach David Culley said that left tackle Laremy Tunsil (thumb) will have surgery to fix a fully torn UCL in his thumb and will be out for around a month. Tunsil initially said he was hoping to play through his thumb injury, but that won't be the case with surgery needed. The 27-year-old two-time Pro Bowler will now miss at least the next few weeks, which will be a downgrade for the protection of rookie quarterback Davis Mills, who has been sacked 11 times in the first four games of his career. With Tunsil out for around a month, the Texans will likely ask Geron Christian to take over at left tackle on Houston's offensive line.
