The Minnesota Vikings signed free-agent wide receiver Tim Jones to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday, according to Vikings.com's Craig Peters. Jones heads to the NFC North after spending the last four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he caught just 17 of his 27 targets for 154 yards and no touchdowns in 51 games (three starts) -- he spent all of the 2021 campaign on the practice squad and didn't see any action in the NFL that year. The 26-year-old product of Southern Miss will now join a Vikings receiver room that already includes All-Pro Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Jalen Nailor as well as Lucky Jackson, Thayer Thomas and Jeshaun Jones. He will most likely factor in for the Vikings on special teams and won't be guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster out of training camp this summer.
Tim Jones Explodes For 74-Yard Touchdown Against Miami
Jacksonville Jaguars second-year wideout Tim Jones had only one catch in Saturday's 31-18 preseason win over the Miami Dolphins. He made the most of it by taking it 74 yards to the house. The Southern Miss product broke away on a stop-and-go route, completely fooling the Dolphin's 2023 second-round corner Cam Smith, and quarterback C.J. Beathard hit him in stride for the touchdown. Jones failed to record a catch in the Jaguars' first preseason contest but emerged as a deep threat in limited action over the past two. He secured a roster spot last year with an incredibly impressive preseason, where he hauled in 14 passes for 219 yards across four games. With only two catches under his belt this time around, the odds are not in Jones' favor for making the final cut this year, but his big play ability may be enough for him to sneak onto the roster.
Tim Jones Leads Jaguars With 103 Receiving Yards On Saturday
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Tim Jones caught all three of his targets for 103 yards in Saturday's preseason finale versus the Atlanta Falcons. The undrafted wideout out of Southern Miss is in his second year with the Jaguars after spending last season on the team's practice squad. With Jacksonville signing Christian Kirk and Zay Jones this offseason, it was going to be an uphill climb for the second-year wide receiver to make the 53-man roster. After recording one reception for three yards in the Hall of Fame game, Jones combined for 13 receptions and 215 receiving yards in his final three preseason contests. Even if the 24-year-old didn't do enough to make Jacksonville's roster for Week 1, he could have earned a spot on the practice squad again or another team could sign him for depth.
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Tim Jones caught five passes for 42 yards on a team-high seven targets in Friday's 24-13 preseason loss to the Cleveland Browns. It was a nice bounce-back performance from Jones after he recorded only one reception for four yards in the Hall of Fame Game against the Las Vegas Raiders a week ago. The undrafted wideout out of Southern Miss is competing for a roster spot at a position that is now suddenly deep on the Jaguars following the signings of Christian Kirk and Zay Jones. If Jones can string together a couple more productive outings in the preseason, there's a chance he will carve out a depth role in 2022.
