Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Byron Cowart is signing a one-year, $1.362 million deal with the New York Jets. Ethan Greenberg of the team reported the news. The 28-year-old is joining his fifth team since being selected by the New England Patriots in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Cowart appeared in 15 games in 2024 (seven starts), recording 26 tackles and a career-high 2.5 sacks. The Maryland product has racked up 21 starts since 2019, appearing in 51 total games. He ranked third amongst Bears defensive tackles in 2024 snaps (335) and projects to serve as depth for New York on their defensive front. He'll join fellow defensive linemen Derrick Nnadi, Jay Tufele, and Rashad Weaver as new acquisitions on the team.
The Houston Texans signed veteran free-agent defensive tackle Byron Cowart to an undisclosed deal on Thursday, according to a source. Cowart signed a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs in March but was released on May 10. The 26-year-old quickly latches on with the Texans. He spent the 2022 season with the Indianapolis Colts, playing in 17 games (zero starts) and recording only 12 tackles (four solo). In three NFL seasons, Cowart has 41 tackles (19 solo), a sack, five tackles for loss and one pass defensed in 36 games (14 starts). He was originally a fifth-round selection in 2019 by the New England Patriots out of Maryland. At best, Cowart will have a rotational role on Houston's defensive line if he makes the team.

The 26-year-old finished 2022 with only 12 tackles (four solo) with the Colts. Cowart will now look to latch on with another organization for the 2023 campaign.
Defensive tackle Byron Cowart was claimed off waivers by the Colts on Saturday, a day after the Patriots waived him. The 26-year-old was selected by New England in 2019 and has totaled 29 tackles (15 solo) and one sack throughout 19 games. He began on the reserve/PUP list last season but never saw the field in 2021. Nonetheless, even if Cowart impresses during training camp, he probably won't earn consistent work in 2022-23, at least enough to make a difference on the fantasy end.
New England Patriots defensive tackle Byron Cowart was placed on the COVID-19 list on Monday, further weakening the Patriots Defense ahead of its matchup against Denver next Sunday. Having started each of the teams first four games despite playing fewer than 50 percent of the snaps in any contest, Cowart combined for eight tackles in that span. With Michael Barnett on Injured Reserve, the Patriots interior defensive line depth is severely lacking, which may make the unit an unattractive option no matter which quarterback Denver sends to the field in Week 6.
