Minkah Fitzpatrick News
The Pittsburgh Steelers and All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick agreed to a massive four-year contract extension on Wednesday worth over $18.4 million per year with $36 million guaranteed at signing, according to a source. The deal makes Fitzpatrick the highest-paid safety in NFL history. The former first-rounder in 2018 cashes in after posting a career-high 124 tackles (84 solo), two interceptions, seven passes defensed, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 16 starts last year for Pittsburgh. Fitzpatrick was an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in both 2019 and 2020 and finished last season as the No. 5 fantasy defensive back in IDP leagues. He will once again be highly valuable in those formats in 2022.
Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has proven to be one of the most potent defensive backs in the league. Unsurprisingly, the 25-year-old is coming off another productive season, finishing 2021 with a career-high 124 total tackles (84 solo) along with two interceptions. Yet, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the organization "won't be rushed into a deal." Granted, that doesn't mean he won't receive one, although the Steelers may continue to play it cool over the next few months before making an offer. Nonetheless, this situation could spill into the Summer, and with Pittsburgh notorious for not negotiating during the season, a holdout may be possible. Fitzpatrick has been one of the best IDP options, so as long the contract situation doesn't keep him off the field, he should remain an elite fantasy asset.
The Pittsburgh Steelers activated safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday. Fitzpatrick missed last Sunday night's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Steelers defense was also missing All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt (hip, knee) and cornerback Joe Haden (foot) in Week 11, and it showed, as the Steelers could not slow down quarterback Justin Herbert and Company. With Fitzpatrick, Watt and Haden all expected to be available this Sunday against the division-rival Cincinnati Bengals, the Steelers defense/special teams will be back in the picture as a starting fantasy unit this weekend. Fitzpatrick, a four-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro, has 64 tackles (44 solo) and a forced fumble in nine games played this year.
