Vikings Release Nahshon Wright

The Minnesota Vikings announced on Monday that they released cornerback Nahshon Wright. The 26-year-old defensive back finds himself on the open market this offseason after the Vikings acquired him in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys last August in exchange for Andrew Booth. Wright was a non-factor in his lone season in Minnesota, recording zero tackles in just one game after posting 37 tackles (27 solo), an interception and five pass breakups in 32 games (three starts) in his first three years in the NFL with the Cowboys. He only played 15 snaps for the Vikings, all of which came on special teams. Wright will mostly likely continue in a special-teams role for whatever organization takes a chance on him next. Dallas selected him in the third round (99th overall) in the 2021 NFL draft out of Oregon State.

Vikings Acquire Nahshon Wright From The Cowboys

The Minnesota Vikings acquired cornerback Nahshon Wright from the Dallas Cowboys on Friday in exchange for cornerback Andrew Booth, according to sources. The trade is pending physicals on both players. Wright was taken in the third round (99th overall) by Dallas in 2021 out of Oregon State and produced just 37 tackles (27 solo), an interception and five pass breakups in 32 games (three starts) in his first three years in the league. The 25-year-old defensive back figures to be a backup at cornerback in Minnesota behind Shaquill Griffin in his first year in the NFC North. Booth, a second-round selection (42nd overall) in 2022 out of Clemson, will also likely be a backup in his new home in Dallas. The 23-year-old has 20 tackles (19 solo) and one pass breakup in his first two years in the NFL in 23 games (two starts).

Nahshon Wright Tests Positive For COVID-19

Dallas Cowboys rookie cornerback Nahshon Wright has tested positive for COVID-19, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. As a result, Wright will not play on Thursday night against the New Orleans Saints in Week 13. The Cowboys now have eight players and coaches sidelined by the virus heading into this Thursday's game against the Saints. Wright and right tackle Terence Steele are the two players out. Wright has played sparingly on defense this year and has worked almost exclusively on special teams. The 23-year-old has just two solo tackles and has returned one punt in 10 games so far in his rookie season.

Cowboys Start Cornerback Run With Nahshon Wright

The Dallas Cowboys selected Oregon State cornerback Nahshon Wright with the No. 99 overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft on Friday night. Wright's size and length is what made him appealing to NFL teams at 6-foot-4, 188 pounds, but he wasn't expected to come off the board until Day 3. He'll need to do a better job of recognizing and sitting on underneath routes at the next level. Wright also lacks top-end speed, so he could struggle to cover fast receivers deeper down the field. He's clearly a developmental project in Dallas' secondary as they continue to address their defense and add depth.
