New York Giants wide receiver Gunner Olszewski (foot/ankle) left practice last week after suffering a foot and ankle injury, and head coach Brian Daboll told reporters he is likely out for the rest of OTAs. The 2019 undrafted free agent out of Bemidji State has caught just 15 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown in 65 games with the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Giants, but he was named a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2020 as a punt returner. The 27-year-old has returned 98 punts and scored two touchdowns as a returner, including a 94-yard return last season for the G-Men. Although an injury in OTAs is never ideal, he is expected to be ready for training camp later this summer.
The Pittsburgh Steelers released wide receiver Gunner Olszewski on Friday, according to a source. Olszewski is a productive special-teams player mostly, and now he's free to sign with any team. The 26-year-old is well off the fantasy radar while not really being a factor at all on offense. In just two games with the Steelers this year, Olszewski had one punt return for eight yards and two kickoff returns for 24 yards. He also caught his only target for no gain. Olszewski will likely latch on with another team as a punt and kick-return option, but he can be ignored in fantasy.
Gunner Olszewski Doubtful To Return With Head Injury
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Gunner Olszewski (head) went to the locker room during the second quarter and is being evaluated for a head injury. His return to the game is doubtful. The injury seemed to have occurred when he was hit hard after a catch where he lost the ball and was ruled a fumble. He was able to walk off the field and into the locker room but was noticeably shaken up. Any DFS managers or managers in a very deep league will want to monitor updates to see if he will be able to return.
New England Patriots wide receiver Gunner Olszewski is a name no one can forget, but has been lost in the shuffle on the depth chart. Despite that, Olszewski put on a show during their second preseason matchup on Thursday. He finished with four receptions and a team-high 57 receiving yards in the blowout win over the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a nice showing by Olszewski, but it would take a few injuries for him to have a role in New England.
Gunner Olszewski Making The Leap, Mohamed Sanu Quiet
While the New England Patriots wide receivers haven't taken much of a step forward from last year to this year, wideout Gunner Olszewski is "faster, stronger, quicker" and has been the second-best receiver behind Julian Edelman in training camp. Meanwhile, Mohamed Sanu has been "very quiet" during practices. Second-year receiver N'Keal Harry has had a nice couple of days while displaying a more physical style of play, but he has struggled with separation. At just 6-foot, 190 pounds, though, Olszewski is a similar target to Edelman. Sanu was a flop after being acquired in a trade midseason last year, and even though the Pats are thin on receiving depth, Harry is the more attractive late-round flier in deeper fantasy leagues.
